Do you follow too many people?

Do you want to organise your Mastodon home timeline into several themed mini-timelines that are easier to navigate?

You can do this on Mastodon using the "Lists" feature, and here's a guide all about it:

fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-

You can use Lists on third party apps like Tusky for Android or Metatext for iPhone/iPad, or on your server's website.

Please help me settle an argument. The best brownie pieces are:

One thing no one ever talks about being an adult is how much time you debate yourself on keeping a cardboard box because it's, like, a really good box.

This one is for all the new people on #Mastodon: did you know that the #fediverse has more than just a microblogging replacement? And that they can all interoperate with your Mastodon account?

Check them out!

Facebook replacement: Friendica
Instagram replacement: Pixelfed
YouTube replacement: PeerTube
Spotify replacement: Funkwhale
MeetUp replacement: Mobilizon
Reddit replacement: Lemmy
Podcasting replacement: Castopod
GoodReads replacement: BookWyrm

The four stages of Mastodon user:
* what’s a Mastodon
* I feel lost and alone how does this work
* oh wow this is actually pretty cool
* I have compiled a linux kernel

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.

I was reflecting the other day on the "like" function on multimedia sharing platforms like youtube, instagram etc... I wish that it was a scaled value calculated something like this: (amount of media consumed)/(number of likes given). So for someone who watches a lot of content but drops a lot of likes, those likes will add moderate boost to the algorithm, but then someone like me, who watches a good amount but only likes things if they are truly phenomenal can just drop like bombs on content that is actually superb.

#Astrophotography may be the ultimate hobby for introverts.

I've been doing it for about a year now and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. My ADHD normally makes me end hobbies after three months tops; not so this one.

You don't need to live in the boonies either, with camera sensors these days you can make amazing images even with light-polluted city skies.

And if you do want to be social, there's star parties and other events with fellow amateur astronomers. By necessity outside, so COVID-safe!

Agreed. The back story is long and crazy. But in short the LGBTQ and others in the community at the time were being mass banned simply for following bad actors, even when they didnt boost, promote, or in any way show sympathetic leaning towards those bad actors.

The reason they were following them was to watch their account for violent threats and then disseminate that throughout their community for safety. But many instance admins didnt care and blocked/banned anyway.

As a result the LGBTQ community in masse migrated here for their safety.

We added a feature for them called subscribe. It lets you follow a person without them knowing you are following them. BUT it only lets you access the posts that person gives you permission to view (basically public posts, you cant see follower-only posts on a subscription). We did this so members of our community could follow these bad actors without alerting them and putting themselves at risk of violence or retaliation.

People again twisted this feature into being privacy violating despite the fact that it honors the privacy rules set by the poster.

Needless to say a lot of people were very mad that their blocking and banning abuses were coming back to bite them in the ass and ultimately distorted and lied the truth about QOTO and our feature to try to make it sound like something evil when it wasnt... those lies persist to this day.

But it was quite the rocky road.

My phone just fell down a flight of stairs, but it's ok, it was in my pocket.
