Ok, here is the brief: I had just read this brilliant paper-in-progress by @maxkasy : The political economy of AI regulation: Towards democratic control of the means of prediction (https://maxkasy.github.io/home/files/papers/handbook_politicalecon_ai.pdf) and the seed of a story was planted in my mind (literally a unique experience for me). I couldn't ignore it so on a 12-hour night shift I hammered out the first draft. Well, here it is:

Love it or hate it, let me know (hell, just to know someone actually read it would be amazing.)
Oh, content warning, it's a horror with sexually explicit content and references to mental illness and self-harm. Be Warned!

The three chinese curses, for those who are curious, are usually some variation of:
1. May you live in interesting times
2. May you be recognized by powerful people
3. May you get what you wish for
In this case its a more stylized version of #3

Understanding #Mastodon gets easier once you get the basic idea that federation between servers can be understood as homeomorphisms across hyperplanes between the Riemannian manifolds of toots, whereas the servers represent countable finite sets of discrete entities.
#Peace in not the refusal to defend oneself and one's community.
Peace is the commitment never to attack anyone.
and mostly, Peace is an internal sense of #tranquility, regardless of external #circumstances.

Just posted a new workingpaper:
The political economy of AI regulation: Towards democratic control of the means of prediction
https://maxkasy.github.io/home/files/papers/handbook_politicalecon_ai.pdf
This is a first draft of a handbook chapter.
It covers a lot of topics that I have been thinking about; feedback and comments are very much appreciated!
in the first place, had it not been due to #austerity. So what happened? Well, in 2010 the UK government - in the wake of the #GlobalFinancialCrisis launched a massive wave of #austerity.
Don't get me wrong, I am not an fan of an excessively big state, but of a smart state that bases its policy decisions on #evidence not #ideology.
From 2010 on, the UK drastically realigned public spending: away from the future (education) & the working age population (welfare) towards pension spending...
Did #austerity cause #Brexit? In the past weeks there was much talk in the UK on a return of #austerity. I am a Prof of Economics at Warwick University and I wrote a paper in 2018 that shows how #austerity was instrumental to bringing about #Brexit. This is a means of #introduction on here.

The paper shows that #austerity was a pivotal driver of #Brexit result. But that is only half the story: most likely there wouldnt have been an #EUReferendum ...
This @APoD #picture is really nice. It shows the Wolf's Cave #Nebula, a region where an obscur, dusty nebula (in brown) meets a #supernova remnant (in red). The blue light at the top of the dark nebula is from a massive #star.

One of my crow friends decided to give me a gorgeous autumn backdrop for picture-taking today! 🍁
They follow me on dog walks to get the occasional treats I toss to their way. Love these amazing birds.
I fudging love the tree at the entrance of the house. #nature. Just back from an evening walk, now on to writing.
So much more love and sense of community on this platform than I’ve experienced elsewhere. Thank you to everyone who has followed, favourite and retooted!
Towards the north end of Loch Maree lies the Slattadale parking area. A narrow single track lane takes you down to the loch side where the view south opens up. The islands of Loch Maree are important for wildlife and also have a long history of local folklore.
Just another statistic.
