* the tech industry is highly stratified, globalized and hierarchical and many within it do not experience it as financially, psychologically, or physically secure.

If anything, this should demonstrate the extreme precariousness of the whole of all people if those in what are arguably some of the best working conditions in the world* can be discarded with no consequence.

One of the folks I know from Twitter said today in a group, “I just got this job two years ago…this was my first good job” — meaning a job that allowed them to support their family. And then their voice broke. I’ve been thinking about that since it happened.

That’s what Elon did to a lot of people.

I wrote a thing for The Conversation about the potential for a #TwitterMigration based on our past research. Including a little bit about #Mastodon though I have a lot more thoughts than are in this piece. :) theconversation.com/mass-migra

Everything ever observed - all normal matter - stars, planets, me & you, the very screen you’re looking at - makes up <5% of the universe.

The other 95% is a combination of “dark matter” & “dark energy.” Think of it as a big question mark.

That means we still have so much to discover ✨

reasons mastodon's "viral dampening effect" is a good thing:

👉🏻 no "main character of the day"
👉🏻 no free text searching for people to get angry at (and harrass)
👉🏻 doomscrolling is *actually bad for you* and not a thing we should be trying to replicate
👉🏻 birdsite's virality is heavily driven by actual paid advertising and bots. You think that "Explore" tab gets its content organically? really? That's not making connections between people, it's about driving sales.

Mastodon is not, and should not be, a 1:1 replacement for Twitter. But it *can* be a new place for you to make valuable connections with other human beings. #twitter #twittermigration

Ok, Mastadon is officially a lot more awesome than I had realised. There's a federated server for everyone who's really into bitcoin, and, yes, it is full of people who are as awful as you can imagine. But, with one click, you can block the entire domain! 12.8k thousand crypto weirdos filtered out in a click. Amazing.

Finding all of these professionals, hobbyist, and people who love to geek out on their passions is really pumping the serotonin at maximum levels all through this aging brain.

I just want to read everything and anything that excites some of you.

The people behind the Intercept remain huge big mad that I wrote this. They're now making shit up about me and trashing this article. What they have *not* done is corrected any of the errors in the piece. I'm used to reporting pieces people dislike. I'm used to people attacking my reporting. But this is above and beyond. Never seen anything to this level. techdirt.com/2022/11/02/bullsh

I spent some time composing some music and sounds for a mobile crossword game I have out.

Would love to hear any feedback from anyone who likes crossword puzzles!

I can't help but see this as a very expensive way to impact midterms here in the U.S., as well as future elections locally and abroad. Just to ensure the people can never create another Arab spring.

Maybe that's our fault for allowing the centralizing of discourse into just a few spaces online.

Mastodon reminds me of why I used to like social media back in my early blogging days on the ScienceBlogs network.

Forums weren't intended to inspire outrage or spread disinformation.

We jumped in because we were genuinely excited to share things we were passionate about, build community & share ideas.

I'm super excited that, so far, #Mastodon has a similar feel of goodwill & enthusiasm. #TwitterMigration

Might as well jump in and do my .

I am a husband, son, and dog/god father who lives in the Pacific Northwest.

My background originally had me working as a grey hat scouring vulnerabilities while I worked on my schooling in Computer Engineering.

That background intersected with mobile operating system development as well as subsequent telephony/modem work. (Spent too many hours reverse engineering CDMA modem communication)

Afterwards I worked on the aftermarket Android OS, CyanogenMod(now known as LineageOS), as an open source contributor helping put up to date Android on things like the Nook Color, the HP Touchpad, and numerous mobile phones.

After the company and project took off, I joined as a paid staff frameworks engineering lead, helping ship the original OnePlus One mobile phone and a ton of devices that sadly never saw the light of day.

These days I work @ Android helping create great experiences within the the multitudes of surfaces it runs on now and the billions of users it impacts.

Aside from that I like to bike, play with my soldering iron, create and publish mobile apps and games, and learn about mental health - specifically focusing on how I can help my family deal with being war refugees who escaped a genocide.

I'm looking forward to learning from everyone in a less toxic environment - hopefully I can contribute something as well.

Have you packed your bags and relocated here from Twitter? You might be interested in reading this paper about what happens when communities migrate across platforms. :) cmci.colorado.edu/~cafi5706/CS #twittermigration

Really very pleasant to read through the content here and not just see a bunch of promoted hot takes and people trying to dunk on each other.

Engagement, need of growth and the greed that backs it makes all discourse vapid and toxic.

Manu was someone that worked at Google and published comics internally.

He left for Twitter and the reasoning for his firing and what they're doing there is absolutely ridiculous.
