Feeling validated. Hearing my phone ring instantly makes my heart rate increase. The “oh, god” thinking kicks in. Text me, text me, text me.

I just made an new Mastodon instance focused on #neuroscience at synapse.cafe . I'd like this to be a cozy space to discuss the wonders of the brain, from cells to thoughts. If you do research in neuroscience or even have a general interest in it, come by and check it out!

Twitter users are all like “I don’t know if I can trust a bunch of career sysadmins and network engineers to run their own Mastodon instances” — meanwhile Elon is just running around the Twitter data center going “what’s this button do?”

Today is #TransDayofRemembrance when we honor and remember trans lives taken by violence. How horrifying that a deadly attack upon the LGBTQ+ community in Colorado Springs should occur right before this solemn day.
Hate isn’t born in us. It is taught. It must end.
This starts with our political leaders, who must cease their cynical attacks against our community before another attack occurs.
Call out the hate. Remind them of its consequences. Hold them to account.

RSS fans!

You can follow any Mastodon account via RSS by just adding ".rss" to the end of the account's public profile URL.

To find a user's public profile URL, click on their profile image within Mastodon.

For example, if you click on FediTips' profile image you get this page in a new tab:

mstdn.social/@feditips

So, to follow FediTips through RSS, use this address:

mstdn.social/@feditips.rss

This will only show that account's public posts. Other posts will not be visible on the RSS feed.

A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.

Understanding a little bit more about the #fediverse through data. Here is a plot of all #fediverse instances at instances.social as a function of their number of users and toots (statuses) and if they are open for new accounts. In general, instances are small in the number of users (median = 28). Interestingly, there are a lot of small, very active, and closed servers in the #fediverse. Also, some of the biggest servers are Japanese communities.

I have learned to uncheck the box for toot layout > crop images to 16 x 9 found in account preferences > appearance to fully enjoy meme and other images:

Question: my home server is qoto.org. As I post about different interests or topics, I wonder if topic diversity will be welcomed or seen as spam. Thinking about local timeline and lack of algorithm. Should I not be concerned?

Let’s try this again. Where you at #fediverse? Boosts welcome so we can get the best sample size.

The difference between Twitter and Mastodon right now is stark.

Twitter: Tons of stochastic retweets and "people follow this person" algorithm nonsense. This only started happening in the last 2 weeks.

Mastodon: Only content from the people I follow!

I almost thought Mastodon was broken for a little while until I realized... the people I followed just hadn't posted in a few hours!

Twitter nervously tries to fill that silence with the algorithm to keep you engaged, while Mastodon is like:

How someone interprets sensory input could be very different from your way. There is so much to consider when we are interacting with others.

Here is a great example of perceptual diversity: businessinsider.com/aphantasia
