October has been absolutely something else with a period of illness, lots to do at work, a major health scare for our kitten, subsequent checks and ops for the kitten, our water mains being severed by illegal contract work, our plumbing and heating being ruined and needing major fixes, needing the boiler removed and a new one installed, a window breaking, work trips away from home, finding out that the house we bought came with a nightmare junk dungeon (positive - finding an old gameboy to trade in) that will need emptied, family visits with lots of entertaining and a mad rush to sort dehumidifiers and get the place sealed, mould and draft proofed as winter sets in.
I'm really hoping that this weekend, at the very minimum, is at least quiet. 🫠
One of the best thing about #StructuralBiology (IMO) is the ability to present your 3D models as gorgeous #rendered images.
I've recently been learning to use @Blender to render some of my structures.
This image shows part of a protein called #Laminin (grey surface) which coordinates a Calcium ion (glowing Cyan sphere) to bind to a polysaccharide (sugar) called #Matriglycan (chemical structure).
Throwback to my first paper for my first contribution to #ScienceMastodon
We worked on the dynamics of vesicle reshaping and scission under osmotic shocks, including bursting and developing inner compartments.

To add to the above:
Since there is no #algorithm it is really important that you #boost interesting posts by others.
A star (liking) does nothing to help increase a post's visibility beyond the original author's followers.
I know it is strange coming from 🐦, but it really is the only way to increase a post's audience.
So #BoostAllTheThings (if you like them) and you will notice others will do the same to your content. Here we're all in it together!
This is quite interesting. It argues that explicitly solvent modeling in DFT is critical for accurately modeling reaction mechanisms: https://twitter.com/SchindlerLab/status/1588180884766662658?t=zYxYoMypMnUAZ5OnaZsKaQ&s=19
It's surprising how complicated reactions remain to understand computationally.
Mastodon reminds me of why I used to like social media back in my early blogging days on the ScienceBlogs network.
Forums weren't intended to inspire outrage or spread disinformation.
We jumped in because we were genuinely excited to share things we were passionate about, build community & share ideas.
I'm super excited that, so far, #Mastodon has a similar feel of goodwill & enthusiasm. #TwitterMigration
This is a peltier module. The temperature difference between the ice on top and the candle flame underneath generates enough current to light an LED. Application of Physics #jcscience #PW4 #physics #STEM #SCIENCE
Something that has bothered me in this whole social media meta switch up, and this time it goes for both mastodon and cohost, is the idea of "no algorithms" getting applied too broadly
We would be better off not diluting the word "algorithm" to mean "manipulative tactics via computers" which is what it is being used as a lot these days
And not every attempt to use computers to recommend you things is a tool of evil. For instance I really like that Tidal will generate me playlists of songs I haven't heard based on songs I like. That's a helpful algorithm I enjoy that and it isn't pushing me to be a worse person. Search engines also shouldn't just give you results in a random order, you need an algorithm that will give you relevant results (not that search engines right now do this well, they're basically all in a state of Bad Algorithms at the moment, but you wouldn't want a search engine that doesn't do SOME kind of prioritization)
I just want to see more conversations about the way these platforms can be manipulative without just yelling ALGORITHM BAD
@TropDePieds@mastodon.lol voice is really hard to get started on in my experience but you can definitely get it to a point of "good enough, way less dysphoria" without a huge commitment.
I found the combination of this book https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34520454-the-voice-book-for-trans-and-non-binary-people and a voice analyser app to be easy for a quick but consistent routine.
Hello 👋🏼 to all my new tooting followers.

Okay, more economic doom and gloom for the UK. Sadly par for the course as people keep voting Conservative for inexplicable reasons.
Suggestions for making savings and trying to remain financially secure?
There is quite a lot that we've already done, and we also avoid additional costs like car ownership, but all thoughts and suggestions are welcome!
One more thought for #TwitterMigration #NewHere folk: be patient.
There is no algorithm to suggest things, you need to curate your home timeline yourself. This takes time. Follow fast and broadly; unfollow just as fast if somebody's posts turn uncool.
Building your following here takes work, too. You are starting anew, and it's a bit daunting, but don't get discouraged — remember, here you are not one out of ~200mln, you are one of maybe 0.5mln active users.
If you post it, they will follow.
