One thing I’m learning is that community leadership (aka good moderation) is so rare, when I talk about it, some people literally have no idea what I’m talking about because they’ve never experienced it. And that’s pretty sad.

Amazing how one dedicated schmuck can ruin your experience of an entire social network.

Which is why “you can just block people” is not sufficient. It’s like trying to be a gardener with only pesticides.

I really need to take the time to write more about this. The rise and fall of blogging as a lot to teach the fediverse, and I was deeply involved with that (I worked for Blogger and Technorati). I sincerely want to see the fediverse succeed, because we’ve tried the alternative and we all know it sucks.

Black twitter right now reminds me of just how deeply contingent black communities — digital and physical — are upon the whims of white people.

I’m a well-known white guy with a pretty deep technical background. If people are saying “shut up, newbie” when I comment on things I find confusing or difficult here, imagine what they’re saying to members of marginalized communities.

I don't understand how people can look at the world and not realize the future is manifesting right in front of them. Their fear blinds them to the beauty erupting from the hearts and minds of kind and compassionate individuals who just want to be free to love and express themselves.

It's truly mind boggling when a person's life consists of division, pretense, hatred, fear, ignorance, pride, malice, and greed; but they somehow delude themselves into thinking they're heros.

@EubieDrew Using appropriate hashtags can keep a post alive and in the conversation for a long time. I have heard blind users ask that we keep hashtags at the end of the posts for the sake of screen readers which always verbalize "hashtag."
