I am considering eventually moving to Costa Rica, but so many have already come, that the natives are complaining of being priced out of many living areas. Going to have to research how to do it while minimizing that kind of impact. "Chinatown" (really International Town, they have everybody there, especially Asians) in San Jose, Costa Rica, is interesting. With patience, you can go everywhere in Costa Rica by bus.

A mild disadvantage to considering , that most people in my situation would consider a plus, is that it is really quite *. Totally different culture than here, but still quite White. Being White is not a bad thing, but I have had enough of it for a while. So many good other reasons to consider Costa Rica though.

*See "", a term that can be used to refer to a Costa Rican, OR to a White/Euro Latino, OR sometimes a White non-Latino who is very comfortable in the culture. It is NOT a pejorative. My brother Paul Drew was nick-named "Tico" back when he played a lot of soccer as a substitute goalie on various Hispanic amateur teams throughout Los Angeles.

The other idea I have is , . A little concerned about communicable disease when visiting the countryside -- perhaps that's silly. The people are instinctively friendly. But there are also strong conservative prejudices. I am not in a vulnerable group, unless it's possible to get into trouble as a casual , but seeing such repression would be quite tiring.

You might be thinking, with regard to Nairobi, in the middle of a bunch of poor , what's up with that. I can't get mad at you for considering "Is he a predator?".
Nope.

But of course I would be saying that regardless. I find the young & Black part energizing frankly. Not so much the poor part, but that is changing. I have about 20 more years to live, likely 10 more years to thrive, so I want to be where there is a lot of life. It doesn't hurt that my $ will go a lot further there than here.

It doesn't hurt that my sister-in-law Apolonia, Is from there.

Pretty much everything I valued at has moved to some extent to . So why do I still visit?

I've come to realize that the main factor is simply scale. The content quality on the pachyderm 🐘 is an order of magnitude better, but also pretty thin when looking at any sufficiently narrow subject.

And, in the other direction, your audience reach is more engaged, but much smaller. (That's actually a feature, not a bug, for me.)

I do NOT feel in touch with the world when on the , compared to the 🐦 . News eventually arrives, but hardly instant.

So a long way to get to asking:

Are most of the shortcomings of just about scale? Can we grow into a more satisfying experience.

Or perhaps, there by dragons?

This is how complex systems learn. It will take a decade to play out, but this will ultimately be a hollow victory for those who are currently ascendant. Because the rout is so complete, every branch of government, they (𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘦) will indulge themselves without limits, and ultimately own every odious action, forever.

A generation from now, after I am dead, no one will freely admit they were enthusiastically part of this.

So we have no other choice but to go through it. Do what you need to do to survive this and preserve as many vulnerable people as you can.

Some of us will need to leave, yet will be unable to. If I did not superficially resemble the favored image of a perfectly, I would certainly have to escape. I talk too much. If I were young, I would be out of here within months.

But Death does more than teach. It removes possibilities. 20 years from now, when this psycho-drama has fully played out, will there be an authentic again? ? A that benefits the common citizen? Will there even be basic ? Will fall off a cliff? Will prevail?

All, some, or possibly even none of those losses will come to pass. The future beyond this impending administration is simply unknowable.

But we can be certain of this: Death will come.

society is not natural. It must be maintained. You can not, must not, ever stop dancing or it goes away. More than a marathon; the work is forever. We got tired & perhaps lazy, and now we & our opponents get to experience the lessons that Death will provide us.

There will be many and some of us will die.

Who and what will survive will often be arbitrary and capricious. Like tornado damage.

I know everybody finds this concept exhausting, but we really are at a #historical hinge point right now. #Civilization cannot survive 3 out of 3 great powers being #authoritarian.

"Metastatic cancers (those that have spread beyond the organ where they originated) account for around 67–90% of cancer deaths2,3, and are almost always treated systemically, meaning with drugs that enter the bloodstream. To improve treatments for people with metastatic cancer, the community urgently needs to shift from using organ-based classifications of cancer to using molecular-based ones. This will require radical changes in how medical oncology is structured, conducted and taught."

The Third Section of the Fourteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution after the Civil War to keep former Confederates out of the government.

The idea was to prevent backsliding.

It didn't work because, by the late 1890s, the government and Supreme Court were stuffed full of Confederate sympathizers who rolled back the advances made during Reconstruction and gave us racial segregation.

You can keep out the insurrectionists but not the insurrection sympathizers.

@Pat Not complaining. Trying to plan ahead.

I am quite happy with the 600 I follow. Also, I am NOT complaining about the new people that have come after me or those that might come in the future.

This issue is not about being overwhelmed, but about the inevitable structural changes that happen with growth.

Sure, I have been here only 5 weeks, but my instance has undergone 160% growth since then, because it is great place. in general has had only 30% growth. I am on an outlier .

How big is too big, and should we be proactive?

Is something inherent lost *whenever* a goes large?

(The advantages are obvious, but perhaps the disadvantages, though hidden, are just as bad.)

At what size does inevitably become corporate in character, despite all intentions?

Should there be deliberate intentional deconstruction into smaller instances at some point, and explicitly planned?

-adjacent issue.
