The concern isn’t that letting Nazis back on Twitter (or any other major platform) is going to make people suddenly start thinking Nazis are good. The concern is that when people get used to hearing their ideas, other extreme ideas start sounding kind of reasonable and even acceptable. That’s the Overton Window, and it explains a lot about what’s going on right now. Far-right extremists use this tactic more effectively than any other group I’ve ever seen. 3/

is holding millions back from and that inertia is quickly dissolving.

👀 Pulled some stats on #fedified Mastodon users and it seems like the key to growing one's audience on here is to post at least once per day.

The sweet spot seems to be 3 to 10 times per day (including boosts and replies, excluding Twitter cross-posts)

Posting more than 10 times/day --> diminishing returns

Posting less frequently than once per day --> stagnant growth

Unpopular opinion: we should normalize black people coming to Mastodon, being safe and speaking their minds.

They might talk about internal discomfort and biases we might hold.

It's not their responsibility to educate us. It's our responsibility to create a place where black people are accepted.

I was looking at the news this morning and I think it's the perfect time to bring this up.

I want to tell you the story of Vivienne Malone-Mayes, Texas-born mathemetician and professor, but I don't think you can understand her journey without talking about the #AcademicRacism in which she existed.

Some part of me fears that the result of the great "factchecker" experiment of the last several years is the discovery that no one involved in these things-- the grifters selling them, the MSM amplifying them, the public consuming them --really cares at all whether they're true.

This #twitterfiles thing is kind of fascinating. The right has spun up plenty of fake scandals in past years, but this is somewhat unique in that a) they're doing it in an extremely high-profile way, b) it's very obvious to anyone paying attention that it's fake, and ...

As we watch Elon Musk slide into rightwing radicalization in real time, I’m reminded of this 1941 piece by Dorothy Thompson.
“Who goes Nazi?”

In short: it is the people who love money and status and power that are at risk.
Those who resist the urge are the people who have a solid family life; a job they love for the work, not the money; a moral framework based on pluralism and equal access to opportunity.
Worth a read. #nazi #Twitter #liberal

Hi, Everyone:

Just a reminder that I've moved to a different account. The auto transfer function didn't work well, so some people were left here, so I reactivated.

Abuse, PTSD, leaving Twitter (thread)

Let’s be clear: #Elon Musk’s behavior (& that of his buddies) is #abuse. It’s not a symptom of mental illness.

As a billionaire, he has outsized power, allowing him to hold thousands of people (his employees & #Twitter users) in an abusive dynamic writ large.

If you depended on Twitter for your livelihood or support system, & especially if you have experienced this dynamic before, you’re likely displaying internal & behavioral #trauma or #ptsd responses. 🧵

Trolls, themselves, don't tend to believe in listening to everyone.

They're certainly not looking for debate.

To them, a discussion is not even about uncovering a truth or—more unsubtlely—being right or wrong.

It's about winning or losing.

From a troll's perspective, all interactions are a game with a desired outcome: winning.

In order to deal effectively with trolls, you can't even let them play their game.

Did a little exploration of instances. Seems to be nothing of value there. Am I missing something?

BREAKING: Mastodon CEO Eugen "Gargron" Rochko announces that Mastodon will soon support ActivityPub, enabling integration with the wider fediverse for the first time.

Yeah, sure, @freemo messes up sometimes. Because he actually DOES THINGS.

He also seeks constructive criticism and corrects course. More than once a day in public.

You can be comfortable, or you can be a change agent.

If it weren't for a few stragglers I care about, I would never go back on Twitter again. I'll hold on one more month.
