This is the post that blocked on c.im for being *about* racism.
It's a really nice post, relatable. Ironically enough it's about how one can feel left out-- even when those making it happen might not be aware of what they are doing.
This isn't the first time this kind of misguided block has occurred on this server.
Check your friends and let them know, it's just not a place where this is welcome.

This should be interesting for #FrontRange #Colorado #AirQuality research. I wonder if the improvement will be significant.
Anyone know which charts and data to watch?

> Motorists in Colorado should get ready to pay more at the pump after Suncor Energy announced this week it would shut down its Commerce City oil refinery for as long as three months due to equipment being damaged at the sprawling facility by last week’s “extreme and record-setting weather.”
In schools, we teach science through the lens of single subjects - biology, chemistry & physics - but it’s the ways they interact with economics, psychology & more that shape our world.
Ultimately, science is related to every significant challenge we face. It’s written into the agricultural policies that sustain us. It ensures we have clean drinking water & enough energy to keep the lights on. At is core, #science is fundamental to our health, safety & future. https://sheril.substack.com/p/a-dissertation-on-democracy
The Santos/fraud situation is bad news for journalism on two grounds, but the Washington Post noticed only one of them.
The Post's coverage highlight's Big Journalism's utter failure to do its job in a timely way even when a smaller news org had blown the whistle on some of Santos' lies weeks before the election.

@dangillmor There is no introspection here on the part of the Washington Post, as to why large media outlets such as themselves are not monitoring the genuine and active local ones. It could be part of a system that rewards strong local reporting. There is no indication here that WaPo plans any changes.

Today is the anniversary of the largest mass shooting in American history, Wounded Knee, a massacre on December 29, 1890 that has been relegated to history as a "battle".
As Southwest CEO Bob Jordan pretends to apologize—remember—SW got a $7B federal bailout, spent $5.6B of that on Stock Buybacks, gave their CEO a raise to $9.1M, & forced frontline workers into 16 hour shifts under threat of termination—while spending $0 updating SW software😳
Southwest’s debacle isn’t an accident. It’s the predictable result of billionaire & corporate corruption & greed—& thousands of workers & travelers are paying the price.
In a just world SW execs will face criminal charges.
It's about time! This is the best news for the new year.

@pkrugman But every airline ought to know that conditions are not always normal. Storms coinciding with peak holiday traffic have happened before and will happen again.
In general, Greedy Corporations should not be allowed to rake in profits in the easy situations w/o also being held accountable for having contingency plans in place for the more difficult situations and for the long term consequences of their actions.
@charlesornstein To be clear: The Marshall Colorado fire did not spread by first burning one house, traveling along a wooden fence to the next. Rather, the tinder dry, bleached by the sun, fences became significant components of flying fragments and embers, which then ignited new spot fires along the trajectory of the over 100mph winds. In some cases, embers blasted into the attic via soffit vents burning the home from within.
It is worth noting that the prairie itself is happily rejuvenated.
The waxing, setting moon tonight not long after sunset. When it's this close to new, it tends to get this "earthshine" that allows the viewer to see the dark of the moon. @kimmnunez
I am furious. For 10 days, Lakota Sioux have been snowed in and trapped in South/North Dakota. I just now heard about this. People are dying. Many have no heat, they can’t get food or fuel. They are burning clothes.
In America. In 2022. The National Guard was called out, *finally*. Unconscionable.

As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.
Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.
Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.
Period.
The “War on Christmas” propaganda was always the silliest version of the Culture Wars. But even in this most ridiculous form, it’s significant as a manifestation of the Right’s increasingly desperate attempts to uphold white Christian patriarchal dominance in America.
Behind Blue Eyes
Did you know that reindeer are the only known mammal whose eyes change seasonally from golden in the summer to a wintry blue? Their eyes also become a thousand times more sensitive in winter, adapting to dim light in the near darkness to avoid predators.
Part of this is because of changes in the tapetum lucidum (TL), a mirror-like layer under the retina. 1/n
@ingalls I think you should be happy they got there safely and maybe have a conversation about the best winter tires for ice. Also, they need to safely get home again. Thanks to both of you for working to (apparently) keep us informed on a day most of us have a holiday!
