Hoo boy. Just wait till DeSantis discovers that the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is all about the theory of knowledge, critical thinking, and World peace. He’s turning Florida into an intellectual desert.

“An MIT Technology Review investigation last April found that self-driving companies, including Tesla, took advantage of the collapse of Venezuela's economy by getting workers in the country to label self-driving data for an average of just over 90 cents an hour.”

"“No serious person can look at this map and this data and claim the proposed CCID boundaries weren’t drawn to make sure as many white Jacksonians as possible get the ‘benefit’ of a special police force and court filled with hand-picked judges and prosecutors,” said Cliff Johnson, director of the Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center." theguardian.com/us-news/ng-int

The famous quote in George Orwell’s 1984: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” demonstrates that Orwell understood how important knowledge of #history is and how it can be manipulated by the powerful to serve their interests.
Inadequate history #textbooks help produce adults who can’t distinguish evidence from opinion, fact from fiction.

@democracyrocks @futurebird The capacity to handle these sorts of catastrophes seems to be lacking. Example: First hauling contaminated soil spreads some of the dirt on town streets, then they use conventional street sweepers to "clean" it up which risks raising more dust. Also note the mayor's comment at the end of the article: "In some places, residents say it still smells like chemicals. They want to know when that will be gone. The mayor says he has not been given a timetable for that but believes the smell is coming from the creek near the tracks." I don't think that the residents should be there. wkbn.com/news/local-news/east-

Train derailment and potential contaminants: This will need to be an ongoing analysis, as it takes time for these VOCs to peculate down into groundwater. wkbn.com/news/local-news/east-

@queerlyso @futurebird The big question about "semi-local" would be upwind or downwind? When material goes up in a big plume, where it ends up descending back to the ground can be some distance away, and dependent on other conditions like rainfall. wfmj.com/story/48355825/epa-re

" A bill advancing in the Iowa state Senate would relax child labor protections to allow 14 year-olds to work in industrial freezers and meat coolers." This isn't their own children they are talking about, it is further exploitation of often immigrant communities. washingtonpost.com/business/20

"Before those operating changes, Regan said inspectors used to have about two minutes to inspect every railcar. Now they only get roughly 30 to 45 seconds to check each car. wtvr.com/news/national-news/fi

The joy of a wind channel. This year, the Arctic air has decided to go through several wind channels, which open and close randomly. The big rains in Callie has a huge flow by Alaska. This is a smaller flow and may only soak north of callie.

I always imagined that when I finished my book I would discuss it and share about it on twitter. But I stopped using twitter on December 16th, when I decided I couldn't abide by Elon's ownership behavior.

It's a sacrifice of book sales and our message to not be on twitter, but it also doesn't really feel like a choice because I just can't.

I appreciate you taking an interest in my book and talking with me about therapeutic inclusion programming here on mastodon.

I saw this story about a right wing parents' group called "woke busters" who were basically serving as the activist boots on the ground for Ron DeSantis's efforts to purge Florida's schools of the supposed scourge of "wokeness." So I dug a bit into that "woke busters" group. It's not great. salon.com/2023/02/03/call-the-

The 7 year old girl who kept her hand on her little brother's head to protect him while they were under the rubble for 17 hours has made it safely. I see no one sharing. If she were dead, everyone would share! Share positivity...

* It's worth noting Tyndall wrote that this field of study was completely unexplored, claiming he was the first to publish anything on the subject.

Also, Foote's background is incredibly fascinating & absolutely deserves further reading. She was also an advocate for women's rights & involved in many historical events in U.S. history. /2

Physicist John Tyndall is often credited with discovering the greenhouse effect, which he wrote about in 1859.

But female scientist Eunice Foote published a paper - 3 years earlier - demonstrating how atmospheric water vapor & CO2 affected solar heating. She theorized that heat trapping gases in Earth’s atmosphere warm its #climate.

Tyndall was widely read. And Foote, being a woman, wasn't even permitted to present her own work. climate.gov/news-features/feat #history #science #ClimateChange
