I don't think journalists (in general) -- and certainly not the organizations they work for -- fully understand the threat Musk represents to the future of free expression and journalism itself.

Begging him to reinstate the banned accounts is pure folly. It is bended-knee supplication to a sociopath who now controls a powerful media company. But the power of his company depends in no small degree on keeping journalists there.

Elon Musk suspended Linette Lopez from Twitter after years of critical reporting on his companies.

In a new piece, she lays out Elon Musk’s playbook of exploiting workers while building a cult following. These tactics aren’t new. Musk has always been this way, regardless of what former boosters like Kara Swisher want you to believe. They were just happy to ignore it for access while journalists like Lopez did the work.

New people! Time to tell you more about the Fediverse

Mastodon is just one kind of server on a much bigger network called the Fediverse. Many of the people you follow on Mastodon aren't on Mastodon servers.

Servers on the Fediverse use a common open technical standard called ActivityPub. This means people on different kinds of ActivityPub-compatible servers can follow each other.

You might have seen the term #fediverse in the last few days. But what exactly is it in plain-ish terms?

1️⃣ A series of interconnected servers
2️⃣ Most importantly, it’s decentralised

Some easy tips I've used to grow a following on #Mastodon:

1️⃣ Make the first move! Use the follow button generously (you can easily unfollow later to clear up your home timeline)

2️⃣ Ask questions and post Toots people will want to boost 🔁 Useful info, something relatable, cats!

3️⃣ Recognise it takes time. Even the bird app wasn't built in a day. What works on other platforms might not fly here. Test, learn, have fun 🤗
