Superb reporting by Ronan Farrow. Elon Musk acts as though he has the US government over a barrel—and the government acts that way, too. Is the US powerless to rein in this rogue oligarch?

What's the Bare Minimum Number of People for a Mars Habitat?
Although some tech billionaires hope to send millions of people to space, that might be more than necessary to support a self-sustaining Mars station. According to a new paper, researchers propose that you could bring that number down to just 22 individuals, assuming they have agreeable personalities. This also assumes that they're receiving regular supply missions from Earth, on top of the resources they'll harvest locally from the atmosphere and regolith.
Hey everybody, this is a good deal on a good read - get on it!
It's @cstross so you can be sure it's dark as fuck, but it's excellent, will have you sputtering about all the places it goes, and does an amazing job of tying up the loose ends of the previous two novels.
Doubly recommended for any fan of 'The Prisoner', FYI
Since I saw that clip of Oliver Anthony singing his song 'Rich Men North of Richmond', the ghost of Woody Guthrie has been whispering in my ear. "Help that guy out" Woody keeps telling me "Let him know there's a way to deal with those problems he's singing about". So today I sat down and wrote this response to Mr Anthony's song, for people like him and people like you. ----Billy Bragg

@MediaLawProf
Is there a source for some of the allegations about this being a vendetta and the warrant being illegal? The clipping doesn't say anything about that, and the articles are behind the paywall.
There's this dangerous open source code I need to warn you people against. There are so-called Microsoft Activation Scripts capable of activating Microsoft Windows and Office without a license key which I must heavily warn against. The pain programs like these evoke in me torrent into my body every time I hear about them! As a cybersecurity researcher it is important for me that the software industry stays alive, especially big tech such as Microsoft who built the foundation of our electronic frontier when it comes to develognument.

It might just be that a lot of people know enough Latin to put it together. Mastodon seems to have a much better educated user base than other platforms.

🤦♂️ Thank you.

@maisiesummers
I keep reading CW as "country western". I do not think that is what you mean. Please remind me of what that stands for.

@scalzi
This is the way.
If you cannot disagree in a polite and thought provoking way, why should I waste my time listening to what you have to say?
As I have begun posting political posts more frequently here, this is an excellent time to remind folks that I have a “no strikes” mute/block policy, which means that if I decide you’re being a jerk in my replies, to me or others, that’s it, you’re out of the pool, no second chances. Note: disagreeing with me does not (automatically) qualify as being a jerk, but when in doubt of tone, I block or mute. Life is short and I’d just rather not deal with dickheads. Thanks in advance for understanding.

And more recently, Italy was a fascist state. Their kind of people!

Here is my introduction post:
Instead of defining myself by saying “I am a…”, here’s a collection of hashtags that interest me (in no particular order). #meditation (specifically #twim right now) #cigars #bicycling #photography #computerscience #physics #guitar #music .
I live in #Michigan (in #LakeOrion, which is 35+ miles north of #Detroit), and spend a lot of time around #RogersCity (I’ll bet that’s the first time that hashtag has been used on Mastodon). My kids are really bright and sometimes struggle with #ADHD, so I’ll probably talk about that at times as well. I have spent more than 3 decades of my life as a #programmer, and now I get to be the old man who leads really smart people in solving big problems with small amounts of #software.
