Archaeologists in the Andalucían city of Utrera have rediscovered a staggeringly rare Spanish medieval synagogue, which was later used over the course of seven centuries as everything from a hospital and a home for abandoned children to a restaurant and disco-pub.

The find makes the 14th-century building one of a precious handful of medieval synagogues to have survived the aftermath of the expulsion of Spain’s Jews in 1492.

It's such an obvious double bind to tell trans people they need to have treatment for their depression and anxiety first, when so many studies show that gender affirming treatments reduce depression and anxiety.

It's like if you had a broken leg, and before you could get a cast you needed to spend days trying to use the leg normally with massive amouns of painkillers to dull the pain.

in a way, money only exists for two reasons:

- bribing people into giving

- making people take only as much as they give

at least ideally, if not always in practice.

it's only necessary to trade because we can't trust each other to contribute collectively to keep the wheels turning. bribing and demanding a bribe is usually necessary, whether that bribe is money, goods or services.

when you try to reduce the role
of trade, you don't see a collapse, but the end result isn't stellar either. it functions, just barely, like Cuba or the Soviet Union.

When Americans bitch about onerous building codes and inspections and having to pay for things like soft story retrofits (Hello SF bitchfests!) I point at Turkey. Sure some buildings that collapsed are older than codes, but a lot of newer ones never faced proper enforcement, and those responsible won't face justice.

Corruption is the opposite of infrastructure, infrastructure is the opposite of corruption.
