Hey, worst programming language poll (because let's be honest, all languages sucks)

Unlike those on Halloween, the DMCA is a monster that won't be going away in the morning. That's why Defective by Design works year-round to #endDRM.

True, I just think some of the wording in the lower left could do with a little more nuance, to match the chart.

Anyway, defectivebydesign.org/guide/eb is a great resource from them.

Not all ebooks have DRM. I buy ebooks from publishers who don't use it, and I still buy paper books sometimes.

Adding to the other answers, if you have C# or Java experience, you could leverage your familiarity with their libraries to ease the transition to FP. For .NET, the de facto FP language is F#. For JVM, I'll suggest Clojure (a Lisp dialect) or Scala.

Speaking of Lisp dialects, Racket might be a good choice, too. It's basically a "batteries included" derivative of Scheme.

Idea: make the website search box send the query to the browser's selected/default search engine, and use the "site:" operator, which is supported by at least Google, Yahoo, Bing, Yandex, and DuckDuckGo.

dos-like is a programming library/framework, kind of like a tiny game engine, for writing games and programs with a similar feel to MS-DOS productions from the early 90s. But rather than writing code that would run on a real DOS machine, dos-like is about making programs which run on modern platforms like Windows, Mac and Linux, but which attempts to recreate the look, feel, and sound of old DOS programs.

Hate that fun size candy bar? Don't say anything bad about it until you're at least 30 feet away from a Ring camera..it can hear you! 👂🏻theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/o

@Moon Strange choice of theme, but I'm sure the Shark Punching Center would appreciate the publicity.

EFF is not a substitute for a company helpline. Press attention is not a substitute for an appeals process. And having policies isn’t a substitute for actually following them. eff.org/deeplinks/2021/10/why-

Interesting post about the strange state of data authentication and encryption in Linux distros... encrypting the OS and user data with the same secret doesn't make sense in a multiuser setting. Also asking for credentials from an initrd whose authenticity is not validated is problematic.

IMO, you'd probably have more users confused by "diagnosis" used incorrectly than users confused by "diagnoses" used correctly.

@thor @jessica@mk.absturztau.be Tech is fine as long as you are in control, in many cases tech seems to control the user.

👋 I'm a hobbyist programmer and sysadmin who is passionate about #CooperativeTechnology, #smalltech, and other forms of user empowerment with technology. You may have seen me before.

I'm interested in #Gemini and other small internet protocols, along with mobile Linux, real sustainability, and various computer languages (including Rust and Zig).

I won't follow too many people here, or engage in politics, but I will share some updates on the things I'm working on.

Very interesting exploration of non-Git* solutions. I particularly liked his point warning of vendor lock-in.

@freemo Integrity is not whether you follow rules other people made. It is about consistent ethical or moral behavior, especially in the face of pressure. That pressure could even be a law in some cases. You can't have too much integrity, but it is possible for one's moral/ethical framework to be too simplistic to handle the complexity of the real world.

The confusion between legality and morality is because quite a few laws are intended to enforce moral behavior. The idea of "moral laws" is a leaky abstraction, though, which is why you end up needing to follow the spirit of a law rather than its letter.

Also, I disagree with using "Love" on the Selfishness/Enablement axis, but I'll admit I'm not sure what I'd put there instead.

Just introduced this classic talk to some of my devs, when introducing David Nolen and why his perspective is good to hear besides Rich Hickey. youtu.be/8o01g6C7jWg
