[ Today, after governing China for more than seven decades, the party still describes “the realization of communism” as its highest ideal. In practice, party leaders have long embraced capitalist methods and encouraged entrepreneurship to deliver the economic prosperity they see as essential for maintaining one-party rule. ]

“I was just in Hong Kong and I made a joke that the Communist Party is celebrating its hundredth year. So is JPMorgan. I’d make you a bet we last longer,”

“I can’t say that in China. They probably are listening anyway,”

“They look at us now as kind of the incompetent nation,” “America can’t get out of its own underwear,”

“But what we need is a very detailed strategic economic dialogue including trade and all those other things, away from foreign policy.”

“The other thing is, JPMorgan can’t go to a country and go in and out every time we like or don’t like something the government is doing,”

"Additionally, the majority of its roughly 9 million adult males have done at least some form of military service, and the will of the local populace to fight against Chinese aggression is growing as local identity flourishes. However many of China’s roughly 2 million military personnel actually land on Taiwan, there’s no doubt casualties will climb as an attempted occupation drags on."

We are here waiting for you."

"Taiwan must accelerate its shift toward investing in defense capabilities that can survive — and prove lethal against — a potential attack. Since resupplying the island will be extremely difficult if conflict breaks out, it must make a greater effort to stockpile not only munitions, but also food, water and energy. It needs to adopt a whole-of-society approach to its defense that emphasizes national resistance, resilience and the willingness to fight.
