Well hello there Mastodon! I am new here, and don't understand anything about this. But I do understand a lot about #astrophotography !

Here is my most recent image, to start with a bang! This is the Rosette Nebula, shot with OSC, edited as Hubble Palette.

Let's see how this new medium will carry on. May the night be with us!

Here it goes, #introduction

Hi everyone, I'm a last year undergrad in #neuroscience & #computerscience at McGill. I'm doing #compneuro research in the Baillet Lab at The Neuro (MNI), focusing on whole-brain dynamical models of coupled neural masses calibrated to #MEG #neuroimaging data (details @ neurolife77.github.io/ if anyone is curious).

I am also the VP of the #ML committee at PharmaHacks, a hackathon that blends #biology & #datascience with a focus on #pharma.

Using a new advance in light microscopy, scientists can now observe proteins interacting and moving around inside living cells.

So, one of the things I'm working on right now that I'm really enthusiastic about is a that shares new , innovations, and developed for people with .

In the latest episode, I had a chance to talk to some pretty cool people from the company VacayIt, and they created an app that allows you to explore new places through soundscapes and stories. The show is in collaboration with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation, and here is a link if anyone wants to check it out:

@martinenserink As someone who joined less than 24 hours ago myself, I too am finding that I consider everyone with at least a few days on the platform an expert that I am learning from!

@apinae Thank you for the tips! I'll make sure to use hashtags and take a look around as I get settled in!

@freemo I'm embarrassed to admit that I had not! And now my life may very well be complete. Those were indeed "not your average points".

@freemo I'm seriously considering it. We have a great urgent care facility just down the street in case things go awry...

@freemo I don't like to brag, but I did take some advanced hip hop dance classes back in the day...

I didn't really know what to expect with Mastodon, but less than 24 hours in, I'm definitely a fan. And, to be honest, I don't think I'll miss the sound of crickets that so often followed a Tweet.

@apinae Thank you! I'm excited to be part of the community!

@freemo 😂 I'll have to admit, I'm surprised myself! This has been the warmest welcome to a social media platform I have ever received. The pressure is on though... now I feel like I really have to deliver something impressive in upcoming toots so I don't disappoint all these kind followers.

@freemo It is frustrating how the funding situation in science limits progress. I know the US has the SBIR and STTR mechanisms that can help expedite development of new technology within companies. Do they have similar resources in the Netherlands?

@barefootstache @freemo That is fascinating, and at the same time, it makes me worry about the quality of my sleep in a way that may impact the quality of my sleep!

@freemo That makes sense, and I'm excited about the possibilities!

@meeksandmilds Thank you! It feels like being the new kid at school all over again! 😂

@hasmis I like the idea of Mastodon as a source of career advice! I don't have a traditional teaching position currently, but I think having those conversations early and with a lot of people with different perspectives can be really helpful. There are so many different career pathways in STEM, and it's tough for students to know how to best prepare themselves.

@freemo Very interesting! What are your thoughts on using this technology for early detection of neurodegenerative diseases? My former research was in Parkinson's disease and I did a little work in Alzheimer's disease. There are so many biological changes before clinical symptoms actually manifest. Is it looking like they may be detectable early with biomarkers that can be captured in breath?
