NASA has officially retired the InSight lander on Mars after the solar panels stopped producing enough power to keep it operating. It had a great 4 years of science operations.

USGS got very similar mechanism, but puts hypocenter deeper (around 20km). This perhaps means that the #earthquake rupture happened in the Gorda tectonic plate beneath the upper N American plate. The small Gorda plate is plunging under N America along the #Cascadia #subduction zone.
Magnitude Mw6.4 #earthquake in the region of the #Mendocino triple junction, at northern end of the San Andreas fault, #California. Mechanism is strike slip; rupture may have occurred on any of the ~N-S or ~E-W fault plane as it's a tectonically complicated area.

Time to finally do a proper #introduction here before the year is out.

Time ago, the now scary bird site, was useful for science, knowledge building, hazard communication, etc...
We wrote a paper on that: Rapid collaborative knowledge building via Twitter after significant geohazard events.
Wow Santa Claus answered me 😊 🎉
At least she/he's alive here 😉
The government of #Germany posted this on the scary bird site:
#Freedom of the press must not be switched on and off at will. As of today, the #journalists below can no longer follow, comment or criticize us. We have a problem with that twitter.
If you are an Earth Scientist and new here you are going to want to do 2 things.
1. Go to the Earth Scientist on Mastodon list below and add your information to the form by using the link in the list.
2. Download the list as a .csv file (there’s a link on the page for that) and import it to your mastodon account in your settings. This will let you automatically follow all of the Earth Scientists! It’s easy! You may have to be on the desktop app and logged onto your server instance to do this.
This list is made possible by @allochthonous

Peer review, a huge waste of time, and therefore money ?
Figure 👇🏼 and excerpts taken from Aczel et al. 2021 https://doi.org/10.1186/s41073-021-00118-2
“…the total time reviewers globally worked on peer reviews was over 100 million hours in 2020, equivalent to over 15 thousand years. The estimated monetary value of the time US-based reviewers spent on reviews was over 1.5 billion USD in 2020 […] The numbers highlight the enormous amount of work and time that researchers provide to the publication system.”
(authors add: By design, our results are very likely to be under-estimates as they reflect only a portion of the total number of journals worldwide.)
QT Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO #USGS) about #MaunaLoa #volcano:
“Mauna Loa is no longer erupting. Lava supply to the fissure 3 vent on the Northeast Rift Zone ceased on December 10 and sulfur dioxide emissions have decreased to near pre-eruption background levels. Volcanic tremor and earthquakes associated with the eruption are greatly diminished […]
Spots of incandescence may remain near the vent, along channels, and at the flow front for days or weeks as the lava flows cool. However, eruptive activity is not expected to return based on past eruptive behavior.”
