It makes me really sad if twitter burns. It was for me and many of us the main #bioRxiv #preprint discovery system and it was really cool that we could discuss them openly or via DMs. Hope mastodon can resemble the nice momentum #scitwitter had in place

Say what you will, Twitter has been an invaluable platform for scientists to find one another, share research results, discuss papers, find collaborators, and more. Seeing it on the verge of collapse is tragic.

My friend @john_d_beatty wants to save what we had, just in case.

From the outset, the bioRxiv vision has been to decouple dissemination and peer review. It's a sign of how far things have come that there'll be an entire HHMI meeting on preprint review (Dec 1-2) - which you can stream janelia.org/you-janelia/confer

The concept of #Fediverse may be so appealing to academics because it aligns well with the classic organisation of the scientific community. #Mastodon servers are somewhat like academic journals, each one with a sub-culture. It's possible to interact across servers (like publish & read papers in different journals). Also, academic community is usually not about amplifying few loud voices as happens on Twitter, but about inclusive and equal representation of all groups and friendly discourse
