@freeschool The site actually split into two a while ago. I'm not sure how credible it is anymore since the primary moderators seem to have switched to PrivacyGuides. reddit.com/r/PrivacyGuides/com

Hi thought I'd put the two replies I got in one post:

@SeekingBlood said "The site actually split into two a while ago. I'm not sure how credible it is anymore since the primary moderators seem to have switched to PrivacyGuides."

Thanks to both for the reply.

@lolicon @SeekingBlood
Hello to you both - I thought about hosting a casual chat about Reddit on Mastodon!

I'm not so deep into Reddit BUT I'd like to ask you both to chat about it (could be audibly also) in order to learn more... what is it that is good / how is it different to Mastodon etc a mini debate
Maybe even a short audio (after showing both of you the 'best of' bits)... otherwise without that it would be nice to chat about this...

I hope we can try either and being up front about it... just for bit of a chat actually more than anything and encouraging people to talk more (more than only typing).

What do you think about this?

@freeschool I don't have a reddit account and only visit it when being linked to it.
While I understand your initiative, I'll have to pass on voice chatting.
Mastodon (the Fediverse in general) is a federated microblogging platform best compared to Twitter.
Reddit is a centralised forum focused on content sharing & discussion, with a heavy emphasis on karma (upvotes). Federated Reddit alternatives are Voat and Lemmy (and Lenny.)

@lolicon Hmm, never heard of the alternatives.
Interesting.
Thanks for the reply in general.
Any more on that welcome.

@freeschool Sure,
- While Lemmy is federated, the devs - who are self proclaimed Marxists - are adamant on keeping a hardcoded list of no-no words. A fork of the software exists under the name Lenny without this word filter.
- Reddit's community is garbage and universally known for being very not funny.
- Mastodon uses the ActivityPub protocol for federation. There's other platforms such as Pleroma & Misskey which use it too, and they can communicate between each other. The communities on these different platforms are quite different however.

@lolicon MISSKEY, PLEROMA, MASTODON ETC...

I like these things in passing and said by those more experienced tha me or seeing what people prefer.

I've seen Misskey in the way that it's quite a complex javascript webapplication. minidisc.tokyo/notes/8xnpg1k93

And some older browser can't see Misskey

Pleroma not so much experience or not heard so much so interested the differences there if you want to share...

For general stats, see some interesting facts here!
(Activitypub reaches 5m users)

@freeschool I don't know too much about Misskey myself. I much prefer Pleroma over Mastodon for its layout. See for yourself;

@lolicon Yeah interesting if the platforms make people or people just end up at places, are just starting to try things out etc... probably always a mix...
I for one can't imagine what is better or why to move (maybe much like someone else not on Mastodon thinks also about being happy where they are)... and so far doesn't seem I miss much and they are java heavy or noticeably spike CPU even scrolling... (maybe would need to test it).
So I guess overall I'd ask anyone "why to change?" if it isn't much different or fancier.

@freeschool Entirely up to your own preference. Pleroma generally feels more lightweight.

@lolicon yeah sure, just I don't know much better and looking for reasons 0 could be wrong on the loading too... also how to measure that properly / consistently is a good question - any ideas for that?

@freeschool No, influenced too much by the server location & specs etc etc. Just try some and use what you prefer.

@freeschool @lolicon I use Reddit reluctantly but frequently since all alternatives to the site are either moderated by authoritarian communists or authoritarian conservatives who ban any political opponents; they also tend to be populated by the same unpleasant kind of users.
