Wait until Recall is enforced for schools or business computers so the sys admins or whatever decides it can enforce "only allowed activities on these machines" then constantly check and enforce it by having some AI analysing it all searching for "bad activity"

Perhaps the reason businesses largely haven’t grown for a decade is because they have failed to concentrate on ensuring good operations and making products customers care about.. but instead they’ve rushed off the latest fad cliff like Lemmings.

Your WiFi router is leaking its precise location… but you can easily change that.

Recently, researchers discovered that Apple was leaking every WiFi router’s precise latitude and longitude to anyone who would ask. They even send you the location of the 400 closest WiFi routers around it.

If you are interested in the technical details and the reason for it, you can read this excellent article on Brian Krebs’ blog.

Fortunately, we have a rather simple way to remove our WiFi Access Points out of this massive collection by Apple and Google (Yes, Google does it too, although they don’t leak your location to anyone that asks).

The method to opt-out, that both tech companies propose, is they will ignore any WiFi that has a name that ends with “_nomap”.

The owner of a Wi-Fi access point can opt it out of Apple’s Location Services — which prevents its location from being sent to Apple to include in Apple’s crowd-sourced location database — by changing the access point’s SSID (name) to end with “_nomap.” For example, “Access_Point” would be changed to “Access_Point_nomap.”

Now, I guess we have to trust they actually do this, but not doing it would expose them to be caught lying about respecting people’s privacy. That’d be too damaging to their brand.

So now, the hardest part is, you’ll probably have to find the way to login into your router again (it’s probably sitting at http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 ), change the name of the WiFI that was probably set by default by your Internet provider and, at the minimum, add “_nomap” at the end of it.

Then you’ll have to reconnect every piece of smart home equipment you own, from your Roomba to your dishwasher, to your new WiFi network. And congratulate yourself for that hard work, because here is one bit of private information Big North American Tech is not capitalizing on anymore.

If you regularly set your mobile phone as a hotspot, you’ll probably want to do the same with the name of that network. Apple does provide a mechanism by default to protect iPhone users from tracking, but Android doesn’t.

While your changing your WiFi name, you might want to put in a funny one. So I’ve compiled for you a list of puns that end with _nomap.

È chiaro, ora, che la socializzazione non solo non si identifica con l’educazione, ma in qualche modo rappresenta un movimento opposto ad essa. Nella situazione educativa il soggetto si espande, e questa espansione non tollera limiti; la socializzazione impone invece dei limiti. Il bambino, attraverso l’autoeducazione, ha imparato a camminare. La sua potenza di agire è aumentata in modo notevole: ora può andare dove vuole, raggiungere ciò che desidera, avviarsi verso un’esistenza soggettiva. Ma i genitori dovranno porre dei limiti a questa sua potenza d’agire: il bambino dovrà comprendere che vi sono delle situazioni nelle quali non può correre, altre nelle quali dovrà, che gli piaccia o meno, star seduto. “Si mangia seduti”, e dunque non potrà muoversi liberamente per la stanza; ciò impongono le regole sociali. Così come non è possibile parlare o cantare in certe situazioni, e non si può prendere e toccare tutto.
Il bambino è costretto di continuo a limitare la sua potenza d’agire conquistata con tanta fatica. Ed è normale che protesti. Si dirà che in questo modo impara una cosa di enorme importanza educativa: che ogni potenza dev’essere contenuta in un limite, altrimenti diventa socialmente pericolosa; il movimento espansivo della possibilità incontra presto l’esistenza dell’altro, che non tollera la pratica di qualsiasi possibilità.
Occorre dire, tuttavia, che il bambino si muove in una società di adulti, le cui regole sono, appunto, regole di adulti. Si può dire che è, di fatto, il rappresentante di una classe socialmente oppressa. Nessuno ha espresso questo fatto evidente, e tuttavia così difficile da cogliere, meglio di Janusz Koczak in Il diritto del bambino al rispetto. “Quando perfino un mendicante – scrive – dispone come crede dell'elemosina ricevuta, il bambino non possiede alcuna cosa completamente; deve render conto di ogni oggetto messogli gratuitamente in mano: non può strappare né rompere né sporcare né dare né rifiutare. Deve accettare e mostrarsi soddisfatto. Tutto è previsto e stabilito prima, il luogo e l'ora, con prudenza e secondo la natura di ogni occupazione”.
Non si può negare, stando così le cose, che la socializzazione contenga in sé il rischio costante di essere violenta e di agire in senso diseducativo. Lo è tutte le volte che non tiene conto delle esigenze profonde del bambino e le sacrifica alla tranquillità sociale, spesso senza nemmeno tentare una mediazione. Bisogna osservare che l’azione socializzante dell’adulto avviene per lo più nelle situazioni sociali che hanno l’adulto per protagonista. Il bambino deve comportarsi bene al ristorante, ad esempio, perché la sua esuberanza può irritare le persone agli altri tavoli, e a nessuno importa quanto può essere difficile per un bambino restare seduto per più di un’ora. Accade anche che un adulto intervenga nella relazione del bambino con gli altri bambini, per far sì che il suo comportamento risponda alle norme sociali. È importante, ad esempio, che il bambino capisca che non può picchiare gli altri bambini. Ma è facile osservare che in questo caso le cose vanno da sé. Proprio come hanno imparato da soli a camminare o a parlare, i bambini imparano da sé come regolarsi con gli altri bambini. E anche questo ha un valore educativo: perché se da un lato la potenza di agire sembra diminuire, dall’altra invece aumenta in modo significativo. La potenza di agire aumenta insieme agli altri. Il bambino dovrà rinunciare al diritto di avere per sé tutti i giochi, o di appropriarsi dei giocattoli dell’altro bambini. Ma in compenso scoprirà il divertimento ben più grande che viene dal giocare insieme ad altri. E in questo caso non di tratta si socializzazione. Gli adulti insegneranno certo attività coordinate, ma quelle significative saranno le attività comuni che i bambini hanno scoperto e creato da sé.

@rsf92 @pluralistic I spent 15 years, from 2005 to 2020, working with my neighbors to build a fiber network in our rural town (Plainfield, Mass. pop. 600) in western Massachusetts. Most of that time was dealing with funding and regulatory issues, but by the time everyone stayed home to avoid the pandemic in 2020, working with the local municipal gas/electric/fiber department in the city of Westfield we had the network in place and most of the homes installed. 1 Gbps for $85, symmetrical, uncapped. It meant that while families in other towns were driving to library parking lots so their kids could use the WiFi to do their schoolwork, in our town they had faster broadband in their homes.

4 years later and we have not had to change prices. We are now interconnected with 5 neighboring towns in a mesh to share diverse backhaul paths and get increased economies of scale. We are building a stabilization fund to cover insurance deductibles, equipment replacement, and upgrades, and we are keeping more dollars in the regional economy instead of having it siphoned off to Verizon shareholders.
