Good morning #qoto ! I've got a #RandomQuestion for you here today-
How do you define human progress?
@freemo Okay, cool. But how do *you* define it?
@Surasanji I dont really give it a single definition. I see human progress as multi-faceted. Just as I dont see intelligence as meaning math or science but includes artistic and social intelligence among others.
@Surasanji
Learning from mistakes. We are all just talking monkeys banging rocks together, on the grand scale. If we learn how to not smash our fingers, we have advanced. If not, then well we will be still sitting here doing the same thing.
@Surasanji What progress?
@Saederup92 Hey, it's your definition! Don't ask me.
@Surasanji Are you progress?
@Saederup92 I am progressing.
@Surasanji Or are you progressive?
@Surasanji I will be too overly "religious" for you. :P
@MOTT Not at all. While I personally don't believe, your answer of a random question is as valid as anyone else's.
Unless your religion is telling you to kill or hurt other people, I refuse to hold said beliefs against the believer. That's not my job or purpose in living.
@Surasanji
An old joke... Since Pro is the opposite of Con, Progress can be defined as the opposite of Congress.
I feel like progress is a purely subjective (I read this as "nearly useless") term unless the aim, goal, or endpoint is clearly defined. Everyone is progressing toward something, whether they know what it is, or not. I think we ought to all be thinking about where our ideas lead and be less eager to move toward those ends until we have tried to understand where we're headed.
What's progress to "progressives" is regress to others. I guess I'm just not sure it's a very useful term and think it's often a label to prevent the need for thinking about the ultimate end of our trajectory.
@Surasanji I think we define it for the context we speak on. In most moral areas I see some progress but mostly just churn disguised as progress. We liberate some groups while oppressing the next. But I think there is sme legitimate sense of moral progress in other ways,
For technology I think there is a clear sense of progress but the rate of which has remained fairly constant throughout the millennia,
