The Kyiv City Blood Center has established the only long-term red blood cell bank in Ukraine. This bank will provide access to components of rare blood groups that may be needed urgently or in large quantities during emergencies. To make this possible, the shelf life of red blood cells has been extended to 30 years, which is much longer than the current maximum shelf life of 42 days. This will allow for the stockpiling of red blood cells of rare phenotypes. The necessary equipment was supplied to the Kyiv City Blood Center to equip the bank. This project was implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Parimatch Ukraine, and the Kyiv City State Administration.

At 7 months old, the doctors at Okhmatdyt saved a baby boy from Zhytomyr region who had a split esophagus. He was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and underwent an operation to separate the upper part of the esophagus from the airways. After a month of rehabilitation, he was hospitalized again and underwent several surgeries to restore the patency of his own esophagus. The doctors also discovered a defect in the child's great vessels and performed a minimally invasive surgery to expand the areas of narrowing. After 6 months of intensive treatment, the doctors were able to recreate the child's own esophagus and he was able to eat for the first time. The boy is now going home to his 8 siblings. The Okhmatdyt doctors are proud of their success in saving the child's life.
