Those cicadas are really loud here. Luckily inside I don't hear them

From "The Analyst":

KHARKIV FRONT ISN’T DOING SO WELL

My contacts are telling me this afternoon that the Kharkiv front is not as stable as Ukraine is claiming and that the Russians are behaving in a random way that’s making it difficult to determine how to deploy defenders. Without knowing what the Russian objective is, (I presume the worst, as they repeatedly stated in endless conversation on state TV, the aim is to reduce Kharkiv to rubble), the forces available to Ukraine are struggling to contain the situation. Four more border settlements have been reported as captured and confirmed as such.
I don’t think Russia has the forces to make it all the way to Kharkiv, but I do wonder is they’re trying to push closer to bringing more artillery to bare and cause as much mayhem as they can, while stopping any more of those ludicrous cross border raids that drew their attention to the area so effectively. Either way, when the Ukrainians say things are ‘difficult’ that’s an almost British level of understatement.

Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:

The situation at the front remains tense.

The enemy is actively attacking our units in several directions with the aim of advancing deep into the territory of our state.

The units of the Defense Forces are fighting fierce defensive battles, the attempts of the Russian invaders to break through our defenses have been stopped. Our intelligence, artillery, units of unmanned systems are working.
We know the enemy's plans and react flexibly to all his actions. To strengthen the defense, all necessary measures are taken and decisions, including personnel, are promptly made.

This week, the situation in Kharkiv Oblast has significantly worsened. Currently, there are ongoing battles in the border areas along the state border with the Russian Federation.

The situation is difficult, but the Defense Forces of Ukraine are doing everything to hold defensive lines and positions, inflict damage on the enemy.

In the Kupyansk, Siversk, Lymansk, Pokrovsky directions, fierce battles continue, the situation is changing very dynamically. In some areas, the enemy has partial success, in others - the Defense Forces push the enemy and improve their tactical position.

In the Kramatorsk direction, the enemy does not stop trying to take possession of the city of Chasiv Yar, continues offensive actions east of the city. Unsuccessfully tries to restore the lost position in the Klishchiivka area.
Despite the difficult situation at the front, units are being rotated for the rest of the servicemen and the restoration of the fighting capacity of the brigades.

Together to victory!
Glory to Ukraine!

NATO countries can help Ukraine protect part of its western territory from attacks by Russian drones with the help of air defense systems (APD) located on the eastern borders of the Alliance, in particular in Poland or Romania. Such a development is not ruled out by representatives of a number of German political parties, including the ruling Free Democratic Party (VDP) and the "Union * 90"/Greens," writes FAZ newspaper on Saturday, May 11.

According to the publication, the idea to shoot down Russian drones over Western Ukraine using NATO air defense systems deployed in Romania and Poland and operated by NATO military personnel belongs to the expert of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) Nico Lange, as well as the former assistant to the NATO Secretary General , Lieutenant General Horst-Heinrich Brauß (Horst-Heinrich Brauß). According to Lange, this would make it possible to create a safe zone up to 70 kilometers wide on the Ukrainian border. And this, in turn, would help relieve Ukrainian air defense forces in other areas of the front.

According to FAZ journalists, such an approach would be a step in the same direction as considered by French President Emmanuel Macron, who did not rule out sending French troops to help Kyiv: "Western forces would directly repel Russian attacks, but not from the territory of Ukraine."

🇩🇪 In Germany, it was proposed to close the sky over part of Ukraine

There is a proposal to involve the air defense systems of NATO countries, located on the eastern borders of the Alliance, to protect the western regions of Ukraine from Russian drones. In particular, Poland and Romania can do this.

This idea is supported by representatives of some German political parties, including the ruling Free Democratic Party (VDP) and Union 90/Greens.

Some further information from another source, on the possibility of assistance for Ukraine with air defence, this would be a massive help to save lives and homes in Ukraine, if it does go ahead, it would free up defence for other areas of Ukraine.

German political leaders are considering a proposal to use NATO’s air defense systems stationed in Poland and Romania to protect the skies over Western Ukraine from Russian drone attacks.

This initiative, which aims to create a safe zone extending up to 70 kilometers into Ukrainian territory, would potentially relieve pressure on Ukraine’s own air defense resources, allowing them to focus on other critical areas along the front.

The proposal, backed by various members of Germany’s ruling parties including the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens, was highlighted in a recent FAZ newspaper report, as cited by DW. Notably, this plan follows a similar line of thought as expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who has contemplated sending French troops to assist Kyiv but from positions outside Ukrainian territory.

Agnieszka Brugger from the Greens supports the positioning of air defense systems along the borders of Ukraine’s neighbors to also shield the western parts of Ukraine. Her party colleague, Anton Hofreiter, mentioned that defending Ukraine’s airspace from the territory of Poland and Romania should not be ruled out as a long-term measure, although he clarified that this is not currently under discussion. Instead, he emphasized the immediate need for the West to “significantly increase” its supply of arms and ammunition to Ukraine itself.

However, FDP’s Marcus Faber pointed out the current limitations in the number of air defense systems and missiles, highlighting the necessity to ensure their sufficient availability in the long term. He expressed support for the involvement of Western air defense systems to protect Ukrainian skies if these conditions are met.

Latvia helps Ukraine with equipment for the restoration of energy infrastructure - a diplomat

Latvia is helping Ukraine with the support of the energy industry, which has been affected by Russian shelling: the search for equipment necessary for the repair and restoration of the energy infrastructure is underway, and the search for ways to decentralize heat and energy supply to Ukrainian communities is underway. Anatoliy Kutsevol, the ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia, told about it. "Large companies Latvenergo and Rīgas Siltums (the main heat supplier in Riga - ed.) collect their Soviet-type equipment and transfer it to Ukraine. There are also companies that sell equipment... Now we are in the process of verifying lists of aid to the Ukrainian energy industry," explained Kutsevol.
