@freemo, is there perhaps something about the scholar.social server that prevents the server from reading it? Can't seem to reach people there.

@jonny @freemo It's federated: there's access it from a different server (mastodont.cat), possibly others.

@albertcardona It's a deliberate block on their end. Generally, when an instance blocks us, we take that to mean they don't want us to communicate with them, and we try to respect that wish, so we haven't asked them to reverse their choice. On the other hand, *he's* always welcome to reach out to *us* (we don't block them back), especially if he thinks there's a reasonable prospect of reconciling our instances. I can speak with their admin out-of-band to try and smooth things over, but I'm not going to initiate that without some indication he's okay with hearing from us.

@freemo

@albertcardona I am well familiar witht he scholar instance and the reason, it happened years ago. Its a long story but it goes like this...

In the day when everyone was up in arms about if servers should block other "bad instances" or not there was a divide.the LGBT community, or at least a large chunk of it, migrated over here to us. The reason being they wanted to be able to see bad instances so they can monitor bad actors for safety reasons. We even added a special feature to make that easier called subscribe.

The owner of the instance was furious and tried to frame it like we were nazis for allowing people from our server to see bad actors, and they blocked us. They lost a large portion of their userbase during the whole fiasco to us and he never forgave us since.

@freemo Oh my. Thank you for taking the time to share this piece of history. And thank you for generously hosting us all and maintaining such a good, supportive, constructive environment. It is not easy and it is very appreciated.

@freemo @albertcardona the subscribe feature and the markdown are potentially very useful for the community at large. I assume they never made it upstream for ideological reasons? Are they documented? I'd love to add them to the instance I maintain.

@giorgiogilestro @freemo @albertcardona Can't help much with the subscribe feature (seems Qoto-only), but if you wanted a modified mastodon instance which has markdown support, maybe looking at the Mastodon Glitch fork could be interesting.
