How to harvest 60,000 fly heads quickly: with liquid nitrogen and a set of sieves. Ingenious! By @Joshdubnau

In case you ever need 60,000 fly heads, I give you my most popular YouTube video from long ago. https://youtu.be/74LY9C4BzeU

I wrote a quick introduction to Mastodon, meant for beginners and with a particular emphasis on scientists. Feel free to share with your community outside of Mastodon!

“Everything I know about Mastodon—
A hastily written guide for data science folks trying to navigate the fediverse.” By @djnavarro

One more thought for #TwitterMigration #NewHere folk: be patient.

There is no algorithm to suggest things, you need to curate your home timeline yourself. This takes time. Follow fast and broadly; unfollow just as fast if somebody's posts turn uncool.

Building your following here takes work, too. You are starting anew, and it's a bit daunting, but don't get discouraged — remember, here you are not one out of ~200mln, you are one of maybe 0.5mln active users.

If you post it, they will follow.

Seems like the #NeuroscienceMigration is in full swing so I'll do a quick #introduction. I'm a cognitive neuroscientist interested in biological mechanisms of disorders of memory and cognition, especially in aging and dementia. I love acetylcholine, prefrontal cortex, data analysis, R, and musical theater.

The move Twitter -> Mastodon reminds me of the move Matlab -> Python. I like Matlab, but Python makes more sense. So, I just signed up to pay a small monthly amount to Mastodon (info at mastodon.social/about). Not super clear if the funds go to my "instance" (mastodon.social) or to Mastodon in general (if such a thing exists?), because this fediverse thing is, hmm, complicated. But it seems worth it. As someone else nicely put it, I'd rather be the customer than the product.

#introduction I am a decision (neuro)scientist working in Tokyo metropolitan area. My interests are increasingly on the individual brains and the larger society. I have introduced concepts mutiscale computations with my papers of sequential dependencies of decision making and foraging decisions. I am trying similar expansions of the computational scales in social domains.

I'd better do another #introduction now I've moved my #fediverse home.

Hi, I'm Dave. I'm a Principal Laboratory #Research #Scientist (aka. Scientific officer) at the Francis Crick Insititute in #London.

I'm a #StructuralBiologist by training. I help run a group that studies #Kinase #signaling in human #health and #disease.

I do #Crystallography #CryoEM #Biophysics #DrugDesign and #Glycobiology. #Science

Wonderful project @JoachimFuchs Do you have any data yet on variability in the self-assembly of the brain?

I am Susan & I study how evolutionary trade-offs affect genetic variation in wild and domesticated species. I am a middling-at-best quantitative geneticist who has made a career off of using obscure 1990s linkage mapping softwares and running the odd GWAS.

I head a research group in Edinburgh. We are interested in #recombination #meiosis #chromosomes #sexualconflict #immunity and have worked on 🐏🦌🐦🐟🐖🐂🦄 in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇫🇮🇳🇴.

Excited to join this new (old) community :mastolove:

Alright let’s try a toot! I’m an Assistant Prof in the U Penn psych department. Our lab studies how the human brain learns and remembers. Our focus is on the role of the hippocampus in acquiring structured knowledge from the environment, and on how we then transform this information with time and sleep. (More here: schapirolab.org.)

I’m part of the bird migration, hoping we can rebuild our wonderful science community here.

Hello! I'm Talia Lerner and my lab studies dopamine circuits for reward, motivation and habit. #introduction #neuroscience
