My favourite grasshopper photo moment: moulting sequence.

An unusual observation in the wild: a pale-looking large grasshopper nymph, immobile, that started moulting with undulating, rhythmic motions. The head cuticle slowly detached as the new body propelled forward–giving it the appearance of having two heads. Half way through, a yellowjacket wasp attacked!

The wasp munched on the soft, unexpanded wings while the grasshopper helplessly continued its slow moulting procedure into its adult form. Left alive but not unscathed.

Ever looked at a grasshopper up close?

When approached, grasshoppers either jump and fly away–if I'm too fast–or remain very still, as if whispering a mantra "I am not here, you haven't seen me". Except this only works when the camouflage pattern matches their background. Not the case here!

Not all ant-butterfly associations are mutually beneficial. In the case of the Large Blue (Phengaris arion), this relationship has developed a sinister twist!

Large Blue caterpillars are adopted by red ants and carried back to the ants' nest. Once inside, however, the caterpillar turns parasite on its hosts and starts devouring ant larvae! 😱 Much like a Cuckoo, it fools the ants into thinking it is one of their own young, mimicking both their chemical scent and the calls made by a queen ant.

👋🏼 I’m Raghav Chhetri, a scientist at Rockefeller University in NYC. I like to follow cells, neurons, photons through the lens of custom microscopes. I’m broadly interested in developing and applying neuroimaging technologies to understand the brain. I feel strongly about current practices in scientific research and strive to make science open, accessible, and welcoming to minorities, historically marginalized, and societally disadvantaged groups.

Teaching Intro to Neurosci, I’m disappointed in how the textbook handles Mental Illness.

In short, it does a disservice to behavioral interventions.

And it holds up the idea of a gene>mouse model>a drug as the path forward (which has never happened in that simple way and never will).

It lacks nuance and humility on this topic. Does any textbook/chapter do this better?

I am interested in using #NMR to understand biology, so my work varies from #biophysics #kinetics #dynamics #proteinfolding to #structuralbiology

An example of our collaborations, with @ak947 and @lapassmore where we showed that Fip1 dynamics are required for CPF activation. NMR was used to study the conformational dynamics of Fip1 within the 850-kDa CPF complex.

So, I've joined the mass migration! Here's a wee #introduction:

I'm a science journalist interested in stories about people & science: how we generate evidence, how we use evidence, how we treat the people involved in the process.

New Scot 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, but always Saffa 🇿🇦, with an increasingly weird hybrid accent. Talk to me about bikes, running, music, and dogs.

#Introduction. I'm a neurotechnologist and neuroscientist at Imperial College London (where I am Professor of Neurotechnology in the Dept of Bioengineering). My research focuses on understanding the neural coding of memory, and how it is impaired in memory disorders. Towards these goals I also develop new tools for neuroscience (multiphoton, data analysis, mouse behaviour etc). Outside science I'm into cycling (particularly gravel). #neuroscience #neurotechnology

Hello👋 I’m a research fellow and psychiatrist at the University of Cambridge. I work on interactions between the immune system, brain and behaviour esp using #ImmunoGenetics approaches. Interested in #biomarker discovery in psychiatry. Looking forward to discussions on here! #genomics #immunopsychiatry #neuroscience #neuroimmunology #introduction

@Javierzsm A great reminder that the activity of a neuron matters in a different way to each target neuron type because the postsynaptic site is cell-type specific. Thanks for your work!

Hey all. Someone recommended that I follow @PleaseCaption which would remind me when I forgot alt text for an image. Got my first reminder today. I think it was a tech fail, as I remember entering the caption, but I still appreciate the accountability. So #FollowFriday the bot.

Eena and I DM'd our emails, and she sent me her excellent poster - I thanked Brad for connecting us. And Eena and I are still talking... ⭐

Conferences are great fun. But they're not essential for making great connections with others.

What IS essential is curiosity, enthusiasm, passion, and a willingness to reach out. These are skills to nurture, whether you're connecting in-person or online.
