"J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji." - Terry Pratchett

@jf_718 "niceness" has absolutely to do with whiteness. Every culture has social norms; there's nothing particularly special or different about white cultural norms.

because direct messages on Mastodon are clear-text, all admins are subject to warrants from their local/regional law enforcement agencies

same with usage metadata like IP addresses and time stamps

i disabled IP logging in UFW and nginx, but Mastodon itself still logs this to be able to present it to the user for authentication transparency

making mastodon more resistant to targeted surveillance would be valuable to protect users

Land mammals by weight, mostly humans and our livestock.

This classic XKCD was based on a book published in 2003, when there were 6.4 billion humans. There are now 8.0 billion of us, so imagine adding another ~25% to the human blob and probably a similar amount of extra livestock.

What chance do wild animals really have?

Huge #climatecrisis #energytransition news - Indonesia JETP has now been announced.

$20billion of public & private financing to retire Indonesia's coal fleet early, led by US and Japan.

This will prevent 2GT of CO2 emissions, and will bring forward Indonesia's emissions peak from 2037 to 2030, where the peak will be 25% lower!

Big big big.

Now wait until people discover @pixelfed (ethical, ad-free, algorithm-free and federated Instagram alternative), and the fact that they can use Mastodon to follow people on there, all while not being under the control of Zuckerberg.

Hey everyone, I'm currently looking for new job opportunies!

I'm a senior software engineer with 18 years of experience, mostly developing software services, over 12 years of work, with working knowledge of a half dozen languages, and substantial and knowledge.

I've done lots of pure technical and research work as well as having been a CEO of a B2C company heavily focused on customers and . In my latest consulting stints I've built up large pipelines in the finance industry.

If need someone who's been around, with an empathetic touch for users as well as an ability to get new products going, hit me up!

@Romaq expressions of anger don't quite work for voting but policies do have impacts and politicians most certainly campaign for certain policies voters ask for.

So you can complain about it and it will be not effective a lot of things but it will be effective at others.

@Romaq a vote is a chess move, not a love letter

@themaikimo same here! Feels like going back to a wonderful community that I barely realized had been lost through many years of centralization and commercial interests.

Just spent literally less than an hour here and started following far more interesting and relevant people than the entire last year on Twitter.

My friend over at regeneratio.org has written down some of his thoughts on tech we could develop to keep forked Git repositories alive ras.at.regeneratio.org/posts/2

@aotearoa_ben my theory is that the slight jankiness and lack of streamlining that you'd find in a commercial product helps to keep away some pretty bad influences.

Then again with this exodus of users (myself included, I'm new here as well) we might be encountering an Eternal September kind of situation.
