The benefit of attending academic talks online and not back in person is you can shout at arseholes when they speak arseholery. I’ve heard it’s frowned upon if you attend in person #academicchatter

Hashtags are great and should also be used liberally -that's how we find stuff we're interested in, across the fediverse. HOWEVER, Hashtags fuck with screenreaders, so please use them at the end of your post, in a hashtag block, not scattered throughout. (I just learned this recently).

@EverydayMoggie
Try reading the following out loud:

Hashtag screenreaders for the hashtag blind and hashtag VisuallyImpaired read every hashtag HashTags out loud and so it's hard for people with hashtag VisualImpairment to get the sense of the post because it's being constantly interrupted by well-meaning hashtag accessibility hashtag allies.

Easier to read with a block of hashtags at the bottom:
#screenreaders #VisuallyImpaired #blind #allies #Hashtags #accessibility

HELP NEEDED: Please help me help everyone find Australian #climate and #energy advocates, communicators and educators on this hairy elephant app.

Can you please

1. Boost this post (boosting is just the mastodon name for a retweet)?
2. Reply with the full @username@server
handle for everyone you know who fits that category?

This way lots of people can add to the list, so I can get a reasonably full one. As ever in this space, it'd be great to avoid the list being all white men so if you can turn your mind to that, it'd be wonderful.

Like Santa, I'm making a list and checking it twice. I'll also make it public.

Started to use and it is definitely the best option so far

So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated).

Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser).

Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.

Small #FediTip: if you encounter a message or thread that is in any way useful to you, bookmark it straight away.

Since the fediverse doesn't have full text searches, it will be very difficult to find that particular thing again a few days later. Especially if you cannot remember who posted it or it has no hashtags.

Periodically review your bookmarks to do something with them and you should be set.

The astronomy 101 lab I teach this week involves playing with this fantastic sun motion simulator: ccnmtl.github.io/astro-simulat

(I didn't write it! But I am so glad it exists)

Though it's always so depressing to see how short our days are at this time of year. Oof, the Sun won't get above 20.3 degrees high tomorrow. Gross.

To further enrich your newsfeed, make use of the 'Domain Subscription' tool available under 'Follow and followers' selection at the lower left of your Profile page. If a bunch of people you follow have their profiles on another server, chances are that the local community is home to others sharing their interests. By entering a subscription to their server, the local newsfeed they receive will be shared in your feed. Over time, you will then be able to pick out others to follow and correspond with.

Question 🙋‍♂️
What is a good iOS app for Mastodon, and why do you like it.
I’m using Tootle right now and am having trouble loading older posts of mine.

The more time I spend here the less time I want to spend on other social networks, even the ones that aren’t :birdsite:

Yay, there is an edit button in Mastadon, that will help with my random fat finger phone typing :)

Since I joined here I notice I’m becoming more sensitive again to the snarkiness and aggressiveness that are characteristic of the Bird site after getting used to it. I think it changes you. Do I want to change back? #SundayThoughts

Leave the #leaves to rustle underfoot.
To damp and decay and dry and shelter and rot and feed and protect and warm and enrich and disintegrate. To melt gently back into the earth.
Not waste but life.
Nature’s quilt.
Leave them be.
As if you’re not there.
