Plant some seeds as weather is getting better!
AND Food prices in some parts of the globe might help you realise *now is the time* to get dig a bit before the sun goes all the way down!... Get people involved or just start preparing and then get help / just do it as you like...
Peas, Tomatoes, Pumpkin, Paprika... just need some seeds - optionally some existing gardeners if any around....
Let me know if you're a grower and don't mind some questions!
Plant some seeds as weather is getting better!
@freeschool or learn how to forage.
You probably heard of the @opensourceseeds project?
Plant some seeds as weather is getting better!
@barefootstache @opensourceseeds
Nope how's it useful?
( whatever people push more is getting my more attention right now!) So tell me a story or how it works for you... :) Planting yourself?
Plant some seeds as weather is getting better!
Not planting but securing that seeds don't become privatized like the way they were originally intended. When you realize that 3 corporations own 60% of the patents on seeds. One will quickly realize that food security is at risk even for wealthy nations.
Starting a commune seems like a far fetched idea, that most would probably be open to. Living off the lands type of feeling. (Here is a project that started back in 2020: https://futurethinkers.org/village/)
Given that climate change is a given, the biggest future risk is water security, because without it any commune will suffer. So your geographical choices are limited to mostly mountainous areas that get enough snow in the winter months.
Although it is sad that more and more people are losing landmass, that shouldn't stray people away from growing crops.
The farming technology is quite well these days that we can plant crops in areas that would be unimaginable decades ago, like with the London underground farm (https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/environment-and-conservation/2020/11/this-sacred-bean-saved-an-indigenous-clan-from-climate-calamity). Or we could use hydroponics and vertical farms.
The issue shouldn't be viewed only from a 2D aspect but rather in the 3D realm. It is true that more land area could hypothetically grow more crops, but if you go vertical, you could get similar yields with less area.
Oh yeah technologically we have it 100% (or more than enough for everyone to eat). But What renders Tech near-useless is the money mentality and other a zillion 'calculations' in between...
@freeschool @barefootstache @opensourceseeds there are people doing seaweed/kelp farming as well which is pretty nutrient rich. As well as indoor algae farming too. Theres all sorts of novel ideas out there. I honestly think the biggest problem is time for people these days

@Bigolbootybuttcake @freeschool @opensourceseeds
Time is sadly too abstract and would specify it down to priorities and discipline.
@barefootstache @Bigolbootybuttcake @opensourceseeds
Could you say a bit more about that sentence?
Oh yeah technologically we have it 100% (or more than enough for everyone to eat). But What renders Tech near-useless is the money mentality and other a zillion 'calculations' in between...
@Bigolbootybuttcake @barefootstache @opensourceseeds
Actually seaweed / kelp possibly I never heard before or maybe once harvesting it from sea!... so that's interesting
And other things people might label as 'hacks' or tips and tricks are realistic and not but often need very precise care, technical setup and maintenance and are questionable how long they last long-term for what is novel and virtuous start... but in the right place can work sometimes. (other lesser-known ways welcome to add here)
Time is 100% a big factor - that's why I'm living near-0... pretty much time is robbed once in the chain and even the money is given back to itself as travel / beers etc... so all is calculated maximised for least gain to individual and more for 'system' or 'company' of people robbing people directly / indirectly...
SO YES I think best for us is to take back our time as much as you cn (spend it as much as possible elsewhere, not do free overtime etc) and hope for the best with people in text and audio chats :)
SIDE TOPIC / ANECDOTE / OPTIONAL
As a novel tested idea I built this small outside oven in 1 or 2 months
http://freeschool.0id.org/cob-oven/
Just to test out if it can make bread and pizzas, of which is bread not really worth for one or two but pizzas can use the heat space better for many quick in-and-out units... but the smaller dome space does need being constantly aware of the wood and heat inside and by eye mostly regulating pizzas. So anyway that was a test from someone raving about it online.
It's a face-paced thing and does work well like that but bread maybe for smaller buns and if wood is properly prepared in right size.
I had ideas of making pizza for the whole world lol and well maybe I still do... but people would only start hating it so it's back to the people work!)
SIDE TOPIC END...
MORE TIPS WELCOME (or suggest what I can do from what you see about me)
Any other tips / advice on 'hacking' the people (getting them interested / self-motivated welcome)... that's kind of my line at the moment doing whatever interests others mainly!
My next guest is here which is going to be an excellently edited chat...

@barefootstache @opensourceseeds
Oh yeah technologically we have it 100% (or more than enough for everyone to eat). But What renders Tech near-useless is the money mentality and other a zillion 'calculations' in between which put things dangerously close to the edge (deliberately) and not towards helping people, even use Tech against others leveraged against their very won survival... (isn't that an original thought!).
So while people often think of Tech as neutral or without people behind them pulling and pushing, also who originally funded it all and regulates it also makes Tech arguably lost if it's not towards something more than money.
