I started migrating to more ethical digital spaces and services after I had first-hand experience working for one of the most abominable enterprises. There is so much I want to say about it but can't due to legal reasons.

@gingermilk we can deal with these issues as they come. decentralization doesn't have to mean absolute freedom- it just means freedom from one centralized authority who is happy to shut you off because their allegiance lies with someone who has zero interest in whether you stay online or not.
the main threat to decentralized systems (aside from relying on centralized infrastructure) is malicious actors with resources to overwhelm the network with a large number of malicous nodes- do things like flood the network with sock puppet posts and other forms of denial of service

@freemo I contributed to that spike. I'm a new member and that's my new toot (hi! 😀 ). I believe it has to do with ban on Trump and Parler. Personally I have been gradually leaving other social media for a long time now. There is no particular reason why I registered here at today (instead of yesterday or a week from now) but I guess the ban of the potus contributed a little.
