I got a PineTime. 27 USD plus shipping. The SoC inside is basically a potato and runs at 64MHz. But even though the PineTime is really really low-spec, the end result is much better than my WearOS watch, which currently sells for 200 USD. This is embarrassing for Google

I bet you’ve heard of Galileo & Hubble, but what about Henrietta Swan Leavitt?

Leavitt changed astronomy. She figured out new ways to measure a star’s distance from Earth & her work helped determine the universe is expanding.

Her boss, Edward Pickering, published her findings UNDER HIS NAME. Later, Shapley used her findings to determine distances around the Milky Way w/o credit.

Leavitt’s work is still used today. So next time you hear about famous men in #science share her remarkable story.

I've been trying to research an answer for this question for some time...

Does anyone out there in Masdo-Land know what the maximum time that physicists have been able to maintain an entangled pair of particles before decoherence?

In addition to my book recommendation yesterday (qoto.org/@bloc/109377741972697), I'd like to share this gem, even if the original article is in German:

handelszeitung.ch/politik/klim

This one is a textbook example of bullshit, although a pretty obvious one. For those not capable of the German language:

A professor of financial and economics tries to work out the numbers showing why bicycle and public transport are worse options going by car in terms of climate effects.
For public transport, he argues that even why those may be powered by green, locally generated electricity, this electricity could otherwise be provided to the power grid, therefore public transport was the reason CO2-intensive power plants could not be taken of the grid.
For bike, he compares the CO2 footprint of a 5 Liter per 100 km (app. 47 mpg) car with 4 passengers (no, this is certainly not the standard here) to the additional food intake a biker would need to handle longer travels (seriously!), which, for the calculation to carry home the point, is assumed to be almost pure beef.

Calling Bullshit, by @ct_bergstrom and (callingbullshit.org/)

From my point of view, this is perhaps the most underrated topic in today. The ability to extract valuable and truth out of fake news, propaganda, lobbyism and misleading advertisement is not only critical to personal development, but to the survival of itself. This bocomes today more visible than ever.
Bergstrom and West give insight into the mechanisms of manipulation and deception using data and provide a valuable toolset to dissect infoation and data to, well ... call bullshit. This is accompanied by lots of examples and additional material.
This stuff needs to be tought in school already.

It's good to see the Internet return to its intended purpose!
As someone with an interest in I quite like to see the current rise of the . With applications like and I'm excited to learn what else the has to offer.
Content and ideas from people to people, without opinion-controlling corporal entities in between.

I'm a M.Sc. in computer science with a strong background in and . Having left academia i'm now professionally taking care of and as a consultant.
I'm a ( and mostly) and enthusiast with a viable interest in broader questions and discussions in various scientific areas, which lead me to QOTO. Moreover, I enjoy good (with a very specific taste here) as well as good Single Malt Scotch .
Having never been a social networker before (mostly due to not being willing to acknowledge the terms under which the available platforms operated), I decided to give Mastodon a shot as it seems to make sense both from technical and phylosophical view. Will probably still be more of a consumer than a producer though.
Even though not being a native speaker, I will keep posting in English, as I feel this will make communication easiest.
