tinfoil theory: they still sell devices with 8G ram so that people will get pissed how slow it is (because it's swapping all the time while the browser allocates another gigabyte) and then buy a new one.

@bonifartius How do you run out of 8GB? I have an 8GB laptop with a dead hard disk connector on the motherboard and I just use 4GB as a rootfs (via tmpfs) after booting from a thumbdrive.

@swiley i'm not totally serious, but cheaping out on ram is a bad idea. imho it's really important for performance that you never get into swapland.

sure, it depends on how you use it, i'm using ~2G out of 16. i never regretted buying the 16G stick though :)

@bonifartius Yeah, definitely agree extra ram is nice. My main computer has 32G of ram and I compile everything from tmpfs which is super nice.

That laptop is 10 years old btw, so it was the max I could get at the time.

@swiley 10 years is a good age for a laptop! :) i have to setup my desktop for compilation again, currently it's only used for the occasional game :)

@bonifartius Pretty much all our job laptops/computers have 8GB ram now. Until still fairly recently we had to make do with 2GB. I even had to whine to our IT dept to upgrade my RAM already and they upgraded it to a whopping 4GB :P But all the 2018+ computers now have 8GB, which is fine for normal office work, yay. :P

Of course, I have a special laptop (since I don't do standard office work) and made sure it's got a nice 16GB. ;)

@trinsec i can't even remember the last time i used a computer with 2G ram :)
