NATO

@eliasr it really is disturbing how well fear based propaganda does work and how well people deal with doublethink: we are going to be invaded (war) so let's talk about nothing but war instead of trying saner paths.

most european governments now only are able to talk and think about their technocratic castles in the sky. if reality catches up with real problems, it hits hard and they are totally disoriented. that's the way erdogan etc. do politics, and it apparently works.

would be great if people would be left alone to call the shots of their own life ;)

NATO

@eliasr neutral through WW2 and now giving that up for .. what exactly?

"US approves $23bn sale of F-16 war planes to Turkey"

"The sale follows Turkey’s decision to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership"

theguardian.com/world/2024/jan

"Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan initially objected to Sweden’s Nato bid over Stockholm’s perceived acceptance of Kurdish groups that Ankara views as “terrorist” organisations. Sweden responded by tightening its anti-terrorism legislation and taking other security steps demanded by Erdogan."

This is all deeply flawed.

WW3 is well underway. It began around 2021 or even 2020 depending on how you account it.

@vic @dcc @FourOh-LLC @cjd i don't think corporations should be afraid of using free software, they should be afraid of cheating. making money with free software is perfectly fine if they give me the sourcecode.

every software with a "community" edition is very likely overengineeredcargo cult trash anyway, at least in my experience. then, about 90% of the developer and "devops" tools of the last decade fall into the "overengineered cargo cult trash" category.

In Open Source, anyone who gets "big" enough to matter either gets onboard with corporate policy, or gets cancelled.

Look at RMS, ESR, the grandfathers of FOSS. All the ones who didn't take the corporate job got a hit put on them at some point.

Brendan Eich is a great example. He becomes CEO of Mozilla and popular-at-the-time dating website okcupid BLOCKS ALL FIREFOX USERS until he's ousted.

Think that was because he gave $1000 to anti gay marriage a million years ago? Yeah right. It's because he's not owned.

Now look at Mozilla, their browser market share has fallen deep into the single-digit zone. The company is entirely rudderless & their biggest source of revenue is donations from Big G.

If their objective was to get everyone on Chrome, they've definitely succeeded at that.

Meanwhile Eich went on to start his own browser from scratch, and it's still not on the charts - but its userbase has doubled for 5 years in a row, tapping 50mn.

Firefox could have beaten chrome, but it was killed.

@MK2boogaloo Haven't beat half life 2, tried playing it twice and got tired of running down flood canals.

@freemo imo ruminants are one of the ecologically best options to produce food if they can graze on meadows where nothing else would properly grow without heavy use of fertilizers. keeping ruminants was key for people settling in middle and northern europe for this reason.

@Vo @captainepoch yeah oils are surprisingly effective. i had problems with headaches due to astigmatism for a long time and putting mint oil onto the places which hurt works really well. almost as effective as ibuprofen so i can save that for the real shit headache!
