I thinkthat changes to the digital world will be coming about in rather short order, at least if I have anything to say about it, that is. Honestly, that's one of the most prominent reasons why I run server infrastructure at home. Sure, my open source org is an actual company, but even without the LLC behind the name, wouldn't matter all that much, considering even though I work in IT, as well day in and day out, i don't have control. At home, I've got all control in the universe.

@cambridgeport90 Isn't it crap to have to work in bureaucratic ms environment, while all the good stuff is at home? 😜

@hasmis I can see how you might feel that way, but I don't find the new Microsoft to be crap. Their attitudes have changed quite dramatically; look at everything they have that is open source. In fact, my core infrastructure has a lot of Microsoft based stuff in it, and that's by choice.

@cambridgeport90
OOO-kay. Open source and ms. My mind must be in the gutter-80's. 😀

@hasmis It used to be like that; there was a time when Microsoft hated the open source community. During the reigns of Gates and Ballmer, that is. Ballmer was insane anyways, though, i'm pretty sure. Nedella, on the other hand, I would shake his hand and say hello any day.

@cambridgeport90 It's funny, I'm retired and do the IT for a 86-ish old guy in a home. I got him (he's rich) a pixel book, and he didn't like it. Then he demanded to have exactly what he had before, and ordered his own hp pavilon. Now, I battle hp, ms, and google. They all want to suck up his data. Sad, and the big win10 update clobbered him. I was forced to enter dark world of ms to fix it. I was a big Unix person, and now run Linux. My kids all went ms. :(

@hasmis I think that all operating systems have merits, but then again, I'm less caring about what Microsoft does with my data, either; at least they are transparent about it, unlike some.

@cambridgeport90 Ha, ha. I'm just used to open threads on g+ and old usenet. However, when looking at the local timeline, I can't detect it.

@cambridgeport90 Okay. I use whalebird, and when you hit 'toot detail' it shows the thread. neato.

@hasmis I've heard of that. Will have to find it. I need a better client than either the web or the one I use on Windows. I still hate the fact that even in the web interface, links show up as broken up into two lines, unless you use Halcyon, that is.

@cambridgeport90 what does your home server topology look like?

@twdockery I have a single server for right now, though that's going to be changing here in the not too distant future. He's a PowerEdge T110, and he's attached to a 1U Ubiquiti USG Pro, and on top of her is a UniFi US-24. I also have two laptops, both Latitudes; Tam is a Latitude D630 I saved from the garbage, while Rand is my main Latitude E6540. Will be also getting a Dell OptiPlex 5050 desktop, as well, along with a Sangoma S500 VOIP phone ... so yeah, I've sort of got it going on.

@cambridgeport90 Thanks! What services are you self-hosting, versus using externally? Do you have any sort of NAS or SAN? What network pipe do you have? Sorry for being overly nosy, but my curiosity is based on trying to redefine my own home network needs.

I think I'm going to need to set up a DMZ to isolate a couple of Win XP systems that my sweetie insists on continuing to use.

@twdockery My one server, right now he's running Hyper-V with one dinky little domain controller (active directory) on him, but he will be a file server and actually use the space he has once I figure out the situation with my second unit (either a Dell powerEdge R420, or my friend's existing supermicro). The second unit will have a bunch of random stuff; domain controller/DNS server, DHCP server, and then other odds and ends; mostly dev stuff for the development side of mine and my friend's org. If you need to DMZ some XP systems, then you ought to get a switch like I have and create a VLAN with the router in the middle to ensure that both networks can communicate with each other.
