Turns out my comment was silly, eh? :) Apparently it's entirely possible that one's local server can show you a post from someone, and even let you reply to it, without having fetched and displayed their profile picture (and/or, as I've also discovered, their current display name).
Apologies; your picture is very nice. :)
Is it the weekend yet?? A curious Red Squirrel playing games with me round a tree trunk. #RedSquirrel #scottishwildlife #squirrel
A woman was arrested for "chemical endangerment" for using drugs while pregnant. The problem: She wasn't pregnant. So officers released her, but told her if she gets pregnant in the next few month she will be re-arrested.
The people who told us we were overreacting when Roe was overturned were never arguing in good faith and also they were very wrong.

I still have my account and all, and look in occasionally and even comment / post; there are still communities that haven't moved off for whatever reason. But it never feels good, and the arguments for just cutting off seem increasingly good.
Abuse, PTSD, leaving Twitter (thread)
Let’s be clear: #Elon Musk’s behavior (& that of his buddies) is #abuse. It’s not a symptom of mental illness.
As a billionaire, he has outsized power, allowing him to hold thousands of people (his employees & #Twitter users) in an abusive dynamic writ large.
If you depended on Twitter for your livelihood or support system, & especially if you have experienced this dynamic before, you’re likely displaying internal & behavioral #trauma or #ptsd responses. 🧵
Trolls, themselves, don't tend to believe in listening to everyone.
They're certainly not looking for debate.
To them, a discussion is not even about uncovering a truth or—more unsubtlely—being right or wrong.
It's about winning or losing.
From a troll's perspective, all interactions are a game with a desired outcome: winning.
In order to deal effectively with trolls, you can't even let them play their game.
Someone asked, "Who gets to decide what gets moderated on the Fediverse? And who decides what's seen or unseen?"
You do!
If you don't like someone, block them!
If you don't like an instance, block it!
If you don't like your instance, leave it!
If no instance is to your liking, start your own!
If you don't like other instances, de-federate them!
If you don't like federation itself, turn it off!
Ultimately, the Fediverse gives you the freedom of association—exercise it as you see fit.
To all Mastodon-admins: seems like there's an attack on all instances by troll accounts. Servers get slow because of it.
They use thousands of subdomains of activitypub-troll.cf. My 'pull' queues skyrocketed.
I now blocked the domain activitypub-troll.cf and all is back to normal. Please check if you're hit too.
Okay, #writer peeps! I am definitely not yet up on this place's nuances yet.
I want to follow some other writers who talk about craft, how the work kicks all our asses, passion, things they find beautiful and joyous, and snoot boops.
Who do you follow that you love for these or similar reasons?

#BookishAdvent day 2, #smallpress edition! “Where we go when all we were is gone” by Sequoia Nagamatau , from #BlackLawrencePress . This is a spectacular hybrid collection that embraces diversity of form to explore national and familial grief, monstrosity/fabulism, and the shifting boundaries between “poetry” and “prose”.
