twitch, transphobia, ableism

Twitch have added a bunch of new charities to their list, and two of them are the LGB alliance - a transphobic hate group - and Autism Speaks - an ableist hate group.

This can't be allowed to stand. Please use the link below if you have a twitch account to vote for this issue:

Mastodon noob confusion

So I posted ("tooted") a thing with a wrong link in it, someone commented on it while it was wrong, I replied to their comment with the right link, then I delete-and-redraft'ed the original to give it the right link (qoto isn't on v4 yet I guess?) and now I can't find the old comment so make sure the person got the right link (it doesn't appear in my notifications anymore, for instance).

I know, they will survive. :) But I realize I haven't internalized the rules of mastodon enough yet to understand exactly what happened to what after I did the things.

Legal aspects of #AIArt

I wrote a tiny piece:

based on a longer and chattier blog entry I did awhile back, on the possible way(s) forward for the fraught question of the issues around tools like and . Comments and discussion most welcome!

A very wonkish and probably too long thread on inflation. Not predictions, but to talk about my sense that we (myself included) have been working with the wrong model given the current situation 1/

Whining about privileged consumer goods

So why doesn't the have a Pilot Mode, where one could now and then (or for that matter always) take over control from one's phone, give it very explicit paths, etc?

The programming seems like it should be comparatively simple, and it would cut down on all the WHY ARE YOU GOING THERE AGAIN YOU STUPID ROBOT WHAT ABOUT THE BACK ROOM yelling by customers...

@rachelwilliams
Love it! Is this v3? MJ V4 (--v 4) has a whole different (larger I'd say) palette of styles available.

Long thread/12

But there's another side to this: a feed composed of things from people is *fungible*. Theoretically, you could uproot that feed from one platform and settle it in another one - if everyone you follow on Twitter set up an account on Mastodon, you could use a tool like #Movetodon to refollow them there and get the same feed:

movetodon.org/

A feed that is controlled by a company using secret algorithms is much harder for a rival to replicate.

That seems like a perfectly reasonable question. The problem is, it’s entirely the wrong question. It’s a category error, because while you are debating, your opponent is merely *using* debate. The fact that you are engaging means they have already succeeded.

Once you're willing to debate whether one group of people or another should be abused, then abusing and expelling people from society is something that is up for debate. It's on the table. It's listed on the exchange.

Which was the point.

It is going to become necessary, if we are serious about justice, to use discernment about a person’s clear intentions before determining whether it is appropriate to engage with them in this marketplace of ideas—even before determining if the marketplace itself is appropriate.

Some people’s ideas are genocide and slavery. They don’t want to win a debate, they just want to be listed on the exchange.

They don’t have ideas, as such. They have intentions.

Rick concedes that Bart absolutely does have a right to walk the streets carrying as much boiling water as he wants, in the long-standing tradition of our country. Bart appreciates Rick’s stance on the matter, and compliments him on his willingness to find common ground.

At the end of the segment, he and Bart agree to disagree on whether or not it is good to attempt to douse you with boiling water every day.

Debate them? OK, why not? They’re lying. They're wrong. You’ll win. Easy.

Now debate again.

Again. Again.

Again.

Again.

Each time the people you're debating *about* have to listen as they become more abstract.

Again. The idea of the lie is entering the public consciousness.

Again. The idea of *lying* is entering the public consciousness. The idea is taking hold, that debate is a thing where people argue by lying. They’re lying, you’re lying, but it’s all lies anyway, right? Both sides.

Raspberry Pi implosion

The sensible thing to do:
“Okay, we screwed up yesterday, sorry.”

The corporate thing to do:
[ignore everything on the matter, continue posting marketing stuff]

The batshit thing to do:
Talking to Buzzfeed about how “this is all an organized effort by a woke crowd with bad intentions because we didn’t put a content warning on a food picture two days ago”

For some reason we’re in the timeline where @Raspberry_Pi decided to do the latter.

Profanity, Rant and LGBTQIA+ and school boards

Since I'm in a mood to complain today, people were complaining at a school board meeting this week that our district's LGBTQIA+ policy was "too progressive" and that we should not be allowing or accepting trans children in our schools.

Are we fucking serious? My child (and children like her) are basically trying to survive and get by. They just want to be themselves. They already have to live in fear and horror of being outed, not 'passing' well enough, being bullied - now you want to make their lives even more of a hell?

I am grateful that I live in a more "progressive" city in my state that even has a LGBTQIA+ acceptance policy. Fuck all the parents who don't accept it and want to move us backwards. I just want my child to be able to attend school safely as their true gender and not have to be subject to your fucking bigotry.

I've reached the "unidentifiably gendered object" stage of HRT, and today, at Dunkin Donuts, it happened -- the gay teen cashier with blue hair repeatedly called me "they" while the girl right next to him kept calling me "she." All people see themselves in me. I am the universal subject.
