An #introduction from another #twitterexile:
I’m Ryan. I’m a #socialscientist based in #politicalscience and #idev departments. My research focuses on #foreignaid and more recently, #metascience. I’m proud of this recent paper: osf.io/7vy2f/.
I’m interested in and will post about: effective altruism #ea, #rstats, #cocktails, #cooking and #baking, and local #Toronto stuff. I have 3 kids (one is 2 weeks old) and so will inevitably post about #parenting.

Even though I've been here for over a month, I realized that I never did an #introduction post. My name is Tim and I live with my family in #Madison, #Wisconsin, where I work for a #telecom company. I'm a #UWMadison alumni and #Badger fan. I love #TTRPG, especially #DND and #CallOfCthulhu, but I'm interested in everything from #indie to #OSR. I also love #film, #television, #history, #AlternativeMusic, and #reading #SpeculativeFiction, especially #pulp and mid-20th century #fantasy and #scifi.

This is how easily all the little infosec tools none of us think very deeply about can become subverted as tools of fascism.

There will come a time when we will each need to make a stand.

Art Bergmann - Sexual Roulette (1990)
Genre: Rock
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Art Bergmann isn’t that known outside Canada, but over here, he’s a punk rock legend. On this first solo outing, he tells tales of a hard knock life, of drifters he knows, and unlovable assholes. This is loud, brash, yet vulnerable. Art Bergmann is kind of like Tom Waits with a snarl. This album speaks to me—I know the place Art Bergmann is coming from.

In the south of Burkina Faso lies a small village called Tiébélé. It's home to the Kassena people; one of the oldest ethnic groups that settled in the region in the 15th century.

Tiébélé is known for their amazing traditional Gurunsi architecture and elaborately decorated walls of their homes.

Dating back to the 16th century, wall decorating has always been a community project done by the women.

Not sure if you're serious. :)

Some news organizations are to a degree "authoritative".

Journalists as individuals aren't.

"Everyone" isn't saying this. You are saying this. People who run servers are not obliged to change their behavior to make you happier.

Feel free to argue that it's a good idea to defederate only as a last resort; look into the (what's it called?) United Federation of Instances, for instance, which advocates that. The server that I'm on very seldom defederates (and has been defederated by some because of that!).

Just don't argue that journalists are so special that everyone MUST change to avoid annoying you. You'll just get eyerolls and alienate people.

@DanBC @jeff @matthewkeys

@zev

Maybe? I'm not sure what your evidence is, though. I left Twitter because it was becoming an annoying dumpster fire; nothing to do with whether or not journalists were leaving. It's nice that some of them are coming here, but is it causative? Are you on Mastodon because Stan is? Or...?

Also it isn't Mastodon's job to drain Musk's swamp. :) If it has that effect, great, but it isn't obliged to change itself to be more attractive to ex-Twitter users if the people actually doing it don't see that as a priority...

Bird Site

@gbrockell
There was some reasonably convincing argument about not deleting one's account, because then after some relatively short time period, someone else could start an account with the same name or handle or whatever, and then sort of impersonate you in some way. I think the idea or suggestion was to keep the account there and just never use it, or lock it in some way, or something? I am vague on the details. :)

Great news!

Ohio Republicans couldn't agree on if genital inspections should be required to play school sports.

The House and Senate disagreed, and powerful testimony from trans allies and athletes ensured the bill failed.

@stanwise

I'm honestly trying to figure out why I find this thread so completely annoying, and I think it's sentences like this: "Before, it was fine if Mastodon was a loosely connected series of gated communities, each one devoted to particular topics and enforcing certain behavioral norms."

The implication is that this is no longer "fine", as if that is something you get to decide, and on further reading it turns out that the reason it isn't "fine" anymore, is that journalists might not swoop in heroically and cause Mastodon to become "relevant", where the standard of "relevance" is whether for instance CNN is reporting on what famous people are saying on Mastodon.

I don't know if it's obvious to you why that attitude would be deeply repugnant to most people who use and like Mastodon. :) Perhaps it is, and that wasn't really the attitude you meant to convey. Or perhaps it isn't, in which case you don't really understand the people involved very well yet!

@DanBC @jeff @matthewkeys

@stanwise

An... interesting "guess" on your part.

The people who run individual mastodon servers are going to decide which other servers to federate with based on their own standards and opinions.

If some server full of journalists, or anyone else, behaves in a way that annoys the people running enough other servers, it will get defederated.

If "just practicing journalism" has that effect, so much the worse for "just practicing journalism". Perhaps it needs some rethinking.

@DanBC @jeff @matthewkeys

@stanwise

Oh, come on. "Providing a space for opposing viewpoints" doesn't include platforming any opinion that wanders in, however odious.

It's not "key to journalism ethics" to pretend that Nazis, or racists, or transphobes, need to be given "space".

Stop digging, man. :)
