This shot of Lake Michigan reminds me of the shoreline not far from where my gramma and grampa Jopek lived in Harbert, Michigan.

A blanket of stars
Over my shoulders
And whispers,
Sleep well

“Daddy what is this cable?”

“Oh that’s called a parallel cable. A DB-25 if I remember correctly.”

“What do you use it for?”

“Literally nothing.”

“Are you going to throw it away then?”

“Absolutely not.”

@dangillmor
There are no "correct" uses of words like "lose" and "wealth" here, that make it "innumerate" or otherwise wrong to say that he lost $200 billion.

No one thinks that he had that much in a bank vault in cash, and had to give it back. :)

It's entirely reasonable to describe a $N drop in "theoretical wealth" as "losing $N".

I don't really understand the vehemence that some people put into this kind of claim. (Except when they say that some billionaire isn't "really rich" because their wealth is mostly in stock. I gather you aren't doing that here.)

I wrote a few threads based on my #research on #Brexit. This is a means of an #introduction. I am a Prof of @economics at Warwick Uni.

1) Did #austerity cause #Brexit? Short answer: yes.

2) #Bregret is NOT a recent phenomena:

3) Why is the #PennyDropping on so many #Leave voters or #Brexit implementation supporters that voted #Remain?

4) Have dodgy #OpinionPoll's shaped the electorate in 2016?

Just found out this afternoon that I was impacted, aka laid off from my job at Intel. My research expertise is no longer needed, at least on my current team.

If you know of openings in UX research, sustainability, responsible AI, and/or the future of work, in industry, academic, and nonproft contexts, I’m here #techlayoffs #uxresearch #mastojobs #academia

It was "woke" people who ended slavery, ended Jim Crow, passed Constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote, passed both Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act plus championed marriage equality. Now you get why the GOP hates people who are woke.

Just got my author copy of OTHER COVENANTS: ALTERNATE HISTORIES OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE, edited by Andrea D. Lobel and Mark Shainblum. Here it is with Hotspur on #Caturday. Looking forward to seeing what my fellow contributors have done.

something important to remember tho: therapy (or tools related to therapy) cannot ease the issues caused by the world we are living in.

struggling every month to make ends meet will cause mental health issues (and whatever caused you to struggle, as well)

but you cannot heal if a space that isnt safe—not knowing if you will be able to keep your home or have somewhere safe to sleep will impact you, but therapy will not fix these things.

material changes will.

I arrived as a Senate staffer in 2006 with a Masters in policy, but academic training did not prepare me for the job.

I spent my 1st morning marveling at how interested my colleagues seemed to be in “R&D,” assuming it reflected a shared appreciation of research & development (a term that broadly encompasses science policy issues). Science touches everything after all.

An hour later, I sheepishly discovered they were simply referring to Republicans & Democrats. sheril.substack.com/p/the-fict #politics

mastodon is a place where i can get lost for hours learning about peoples’ experience as well as global news sourced from actual journalists without a paywall. as a bookworm, b4 joining i’d regularly get lost in wikipedia returning hours later not remembering what my initial query was. the peace of this decentralized collective without the need for constant vigilance of trolls and hate accounts has given me unfettered access to like-minded people. i remain so very grateful for the fediverse.
