I think much of the hype around various scenarios where the output of the software is used directly for anything much, is just hype. I think most of the impact will be (as it has been so far) in people interacting with the software personally, in order to get ideas, brainstorm, just have fun, and that sort of thing. I'm sure there will be a ton of mediocre text posted, but there already is; this is just a matter of degree. I'm rather optimistic that the negative impact will be limited.

Why is the prevailing story in the media “the price of eggs is high” and not “record windfall profits from food and oil companies” ??

America’s largest egg producer Cal-Maine reported a record quarterly profit of $198 million

Anti-poverty charity Oxfam is calling for governments to impose windfall taxes on large food companies

THAT’S the story.

A Desolation Called Peace
by Arkady Martine

If you like intelligent space opera, this jewel is for you. Arkady Martine won the Hugo Award for the initial book in this series, A Memory Called Empire, and this sequel is as good, if not better. Strong characters, well thought out plot, and great writing pull you along. Read Memory first. The world building is awesome but complicated and Peace jumps right into the action without preamble.
Highly recommended.

It's 1989. I'm an assistant cameraman on a #BBC documentary in #Haiti. A boy had been trailing us for hours, wanting to help. Seemed like a nice kid. He was interested in my camera so I showed him how it worked. Then, he grabbed my camera, ran about 20 feet turned, and snapped this photo of me. He captured perfectly the look on my face, just as I realized I might never see my camera again. Then, he ran back, handed me my camera, all smiles.
Good kid. Wonder whatever became of him.

My fiancé has really been hit hard by the Birdsite third party app death thing. She used Twitterrific, and absolutely HATES!!!! the Twitter app experience. She mostly uses Twitter for Hockey news, and has tasked me to find hockey stuff on Mastodon.
I am *not* a sports person by any means.
So, for those who are, HELP!

In the wake of J6th, many far-Right groups are in chaos, while other newer formations are rushing to fill the void.

In the latest installment of #ThisWeekInFascism, we roundup the growing collection of neo-fascist, white supremacist, and neo-Nazi groups that have been growing over the last few months, as the far-Right mobilizes to attack the #LGBTQ community.

We also look at how antifascists have been pushing back.

Blue sea dragons float on the ocean's surface, a habitat that covers over 70% of our planet. Animals like this are the 'average' Earthling, we humans, living on the hard dry Earth, are the exception. If aliens had to describe life on our planet, this is what they'd see.

Big thanks to @Ravencanada for the #books recommendation!

I went with the hardback because I already knew that this is a version that I would like to refer back to for years.

I've been collecting interesting examples of information organisation in history, focusing on non-Western civilisations. I came across this example of an ancient Mesopotamian spreadsheet! It records wages paid to temple workers in 1295 BCE.
