With each new surge of Mastodon users, I feel the need to point out:
1. Welcome!
2. There is a learning curve here, but most people find it short and not very steep. Play around, explore. You'll get it.
3. Lots of people are willing to help.
4. Yes, it's different than Twitter. Sometimes in good ways, sometimes not. But you'll figure it out.
5. With surges especially, things sometimes get slow/glitchy, but they usually get fixed pretty quick.
Be patient.
@guacamayan @Papita @inklings @osma @zack I found this piece helpful in illustrating the giant culture shock that hit the Mastodon community just a few weeks ago https://www.hughrundle.net/home-invasion/
#introduction I’m an economist studying firm dynamics, #productivity , aggregate productivity growth and measurement issues (such as #imputation) in #CensusData at the U.S. Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies. Misplaced Tar Heel.
I guess I was supposed to post an #introduction when I joined #Mastodon a few weeks ago. Who knew?
Here it goes:

@heidilifeldman Probably looking through the funny cartoons in a book and asking my parents what they meant. It was a book of old-even-then Herblock political cartoons, and I learned (or failed to learn) various things about 40s and 50s politics...
Have I mentioned that when we rebuilt and relaunched hcommons.social we kind of turbo-charged it, precisely in preparation for an event such as today? All of which is to say that our server is super stable and hcommons.social is here to serve all your scholarly social networking needs. (Pass it on.)
Crises like pandemics make inequalities worse -- right?
Let Martin Eiermann and I tell you about a surprising exception -- and a puzzle that might turn on an unusual collision of viral and social histories.

New instance, new #Introduction
I'm Alex, and have gone by a variety of nicknames and handles of the decades on HAM/IRC/etc. This is going to end up being mostly image posts of food I've prepared/cooked, or motorcyling, or random bits of geekery.
I'm currently out in Southern California, doing some WFH for an ISP. Otherwise I'm #cooking or riding #motorcycles or building #Warhammer40K #AgeOfSigmar models.
Does Twitter blocking Mastodon links constitute anticompetitive behavior against a nascent rival? I asked a couple of legal experts, including Bill Baer, the former antitrust chief at DOJ and FTC in two US administrations. Here's what they say: https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/16/tech/mastodon-twitter-links/index.html
Welcome to Friendo.Space!
I am the "MySpace Tom" of this instance and this is my #introduction.
I enjoy talking about #technology, especially about #ChromeOS, #Linux #servers, #Google, and #FLOSS. I work in #IT for a school but I really want to do something bigger someday.
I like both #Pokemon and #Digimon, #rock #music, #physics, #philosophy, and more.
I'm a proud #Socialist and #AntiCapitalist because humans are meant to help out one another and not compete over stupid shit.
Have fun!
@heidilifeldman My earliest political memory is watching an election rally through the gates in my hometown in India. People happily shouting slogans, holding up a red flag with a sickle and a hammer along with a picture of a serious looking bald man with a goatee. My grandfather told me this, with an equal mixture of pride, nostalgia and wonder still, that my state - much before this particular rally - had one of the first democratically elected communist governments in the world.
@natehanson Is that really real? It does sound rather like him, but...
New #TwinTrouble podcast dropped- Welcome to… CRYPTO FASCIST HELL!
with guests Molly White (@molly0xfff) and Cooper Quintin (@cooperq)
A long overdue evisceration of the grift of crypto. We’re calling out the tech-fascists, the frauds accelerating the apocalypse clock in this dystopic timeline. As the collapses pile up, what should ethical techies be doing to fight back? Burn, web3, burn!

Posting about culture, philosophy, politics, AI Art Tools, NaNoWriMo, Software Development occasionally, the relationship of consciousness to matter.
