Rosalind Franklin, born in 1920, was a British chemist whose contributions were vital to the discovery of the structure of DNA. Her work led to the Nobel Prize being awarded to two men, Watson and Crick, who allegedly stole her work and never acknowledged her contribution. #WomensHistoryMonth
OK. I have to admit this was pretty amazing. First prompt ever. **unicorn made of amber with fossilized fairies inside** #midjourney
The astronomy community is investing a lot of time & effort in trying to analyse this problem, & while some of the satellite operators have shown willingness to engage & try to find ways of reducing the brightness of their satellites, the commercial imperative is strong.
Equally, we're working with organisations like the UN to protect the sky as a common resource & cultural heritage, but such endeavours take a lot of time, while satellites are being launched at ever-increasing rates.

New paper day:
Just published in @NatureAstronomy, a study by @sandorkruk et al. on the increasing impact of satellite trails on Hubble & other low-Earth orbit space observatories.
We found a doubling in the number of trails per image from 2002–2021, with a significant rise of ~50% in 2021 alone, as the "megaconstellations" started to appear.

As of yesterday I've been putting out beatboxing content on tiktok every day for 60 days. Along with that, I have plans to start performing in my local area.

^ This is the extra long freestyle I did to celebrate 2 months of consistent content creation doing what I love. I fucked up the audio a bit (sunglasses hitting the mic) but overall I'm still proud of where I've ended up so far and what I'm able to do.
DMs open for collab, and please credit me if you use my music.
Foundations of Human Sociality
When I worked w/ Institute for the Future on "the cooperation project," we saw how insights abt human cooperation were fragmented among different disciplines. So we created these summaries. My original vision, not implemented, was to arrange resources on a visual clickable digital map: Hover over a node and a one sentence summary pops up; hold mouse down and a paragraph summary pops up; click through to see entire summary.
One key issue is identifying the culprits of such trails, which can include old space debris as well, of course.
That's the case with this image of the Abell 370 cluster from February 2020 noted by @spacegeck, where the trailee was found by @planet4589 to be the Chinese Long March 4C Y33 third stage passing 34 kilometres above Hubble.

I have at least five, probably six, maybe more, of these little dinguses that plug into my phone's USB-C port, and provide one USB-C port and a headphone jack at the other end, so that I can charge my phone and listen to its audio at the same time.
I can very seldom find any of them.
Are they all in the same obscure place somewhere, an attractor someplace out of sight? Or are they each lost separately, in individual obscure places?
Or have they been stolen by house elves, or the NSA?
Metaverse, Zuckerberg
Haha so fickle!
How long until the headlines are "[company] quietly buries generative AI", and what will the New Hotness be then?

Okay, #introduction time! I'm Ell, and I love figuring out how things work. Been having a very gendery time as of late, getting to know my #trans #femme self in my 30's has been just so wonderful.
Dayjob is software dev, but I also studied #ElectricalEngineering and am always tinkering with and fixing things, both #hardware and #software.
Interests more or less at random: I do a lot of playing with #data and finding useful ways to present it, which results in various #maps and #charts.
Things I can talk a lot about include #emoji, how the internet works, and #space.
I'm into amateur #astronomy, I've got a small #telescope 🔭 and am always thrilled to use it to share the cosmos with folks.
I play the #piano reasonably well, #guitar and #clarinet less so, and enjoy singing as long as you don't hold me to the lyrics 😄
I don't play a ton of games, but I've put a bunch of hours into #HollowKnight and still stream it occasionally, and also adore #Transistor and #Celeste. Also into #boardgames and such!
The Free Map Archives have been updated.
1,203 maps are now linked to from that page.
I've been thinking about a discussion format that harkens a bit to the old days of the FIDO-net, where you got your mail delivered via a download from your local BBS. This serves as a natural way to decelerate things - usually there's a day between you writing and people responding.
This could be done totally artificially, too. I mean, there's nothing wrong with also combining it with a batch download of daily messages for offline capability, but it's not a strict requirement.
