Resetting my masto experience to what I originally imagined and intended it to be--1,2,3,..wow, 4 mos. ago when I joined. Gentle interactions with real ppl re. shared interests, music, life's little happenings. If I happen to say something funny, it will be purely by accident, not design. Boring to some, but closer to me in real life. Oh! and cat emojis & kindness, of course. ☮️ ![]()
“The destruction of $37.5 billion in value in less than six months must have set some sort of Wall Street record.”
This Verge piece about the continued blue check rental debacle is very good 👇🏾
"The basic truth of cool, as anyone can tell you, is that trying to be cool is not cool, and paying to be cool is for suckers"
"paying to be cool is for suckers" LOLLLLL....*BRILLIANT*

An artful bit of understatement from Greta Thunberg (@gretathunberg):
"Leaving capitalist consumerism and market economics as the dominant stewards of the only known civilization in the universe will most likely seem, in retrospect, to have been a terrible idea."

I’m realizing that growing up as a wired magazine-reading cyberpunk believer— a kid who thought adbusters and the internet could save the world— and then watching as every technological miracle was turned not towards revolution or saving humanity but instead more pernicious and intractable methods of exploitation has made me uncomfortable with technological optimism. “assume all new technology will be used against you” —
The history of Earth as the length of a human’s outstretched arm - representing 4.5 billion years of time.
At this scale, humans emerged so recently that we could be filed off from a microscopic slice at the very tip of a fingernail nail.

I have to remember that, because #Mastodon doesn't have #algorithm curated feeds, I have to #boost / reblog interesting people more often. Liking their posts doesn't make them more visible.
Also, if you want to find new people, I use the #Welcome hashtag whenever I say hi to a new person who posted an #Introduction. I try to greet interesting people pretty frequently.
Love y'all! Keep being kind! 💜
It is kinda crazy just how frequently Devin Nunes sues people for defamation. And yet, he never wins. It kinda makes you wonder who's paying for all this...
It's too bad @DevinCow went back to Twitter...
In the "hat tiling" we can change the parameter 𝑥 to get Tile(𝑥), which is also an aperiodic monotile ( https://mathstodon.xyz/@csk/110058810967206467 ). But what if we try Tile(𝑧) where 𝑧 is a complex number?
That has a natural interpretation when the plane is considered to be the complex plane. However, while for 𝑥∈ℝ the tiling consists of Tile(𝑥) and mirrored copies of Tile(𝑥), for 𝑧∈ℂ, it consists of Tile(𝑧) and mirrored copies of Tile(conj(𝑧)). So no longer a monotile, but still cool and likely still aperiodic.
The animation includes cases where 𝑧 is too far from "the hat value" -- the tiles may overlap then.

All I want is another hundred episodes of #Bones that's like the first few episodes, lots of vague sexual tension, the lady herself proudly enjoying her nerdiness, no stupid supervillian serial killers, just interesting case-of-the-weeks.
Maybe Bones and Booth come out as gay, Angela is bi and hooks up with both of them now and then (hilarity ensues), and various of Hodgins' conspiracy theories turn out to be (half) true, perhaps they go rogue and have a secret underground lab where they investigate cases too hot or surreal for the gov't to touch...
Or, you know, that sort of thing. :)
Today on This Is Not the Beginning of a Horror Novel It’s Just Tuesday In Maine News…
I found this thing buried in the woods behind my house! I THINK it might be a clothing iron without a handle? It’s VERY heavy though hollow.
I think the bottom says POTTSTOWN, PA USA. The top says IRON CO. But the name of the company is corroded.
That or it summons the Old Ones from soil and sea.
Any clues? Historians? Lovecraftian cultists? Any ideas on how to clean it up further?
