If we met an alien species, would any of our units of measurement be the same?

It's #SmallBusinessSaturday! I have a very small business: a jewelry shop run by me with help from my husband. (Sometimes my mom and dad take me to the post office.)

I do simple gemstone work as well as fused glass, which I make in a tiny tabletop kiln.

“It’s time to turn off this car accident of a tech future, and get on with reclaiming the world from this new generation of robber barons. These are not the demigods we’re looking for.” @Rushkoff brilliant article.

I'm a disabled artisan and I have built my artistic practice around my limitations. I'm not able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, so I spend time looking for interesting parts to put together for assembled pieces from bed. And I rest while the kiln runs.

With the OpenAI clownshow, there's been renewed media attention on the xrisk/"AI safety"/doomer nonsense. Personally, I've had a fresh wave of reporters asking me naive questions (as well as some contacts from old hands who are on top of how to handle ultra-rich man-children with god complexes). 🧵1/

silly AI dream

Had a dream in which I took a photo of several everyday objects on a table (keys, diver's license, etc.) and then asked GPT-4 to describe the contents of the picture.

It got pretty far, but then made up a story about the driver's license holder being an international spy, and interpreted everything in the rest of the photograph to fit the theme.

Since the dream itself was made-up, does this count as a meta-hallucination? :blobhyperthink:

Anyone in the UK collect or have an interest in old hand operated sewing machines? I've had this in my shed for years and it needs to go to a new home.

Not only was it not a terrorist attack, the model of Bentley that ran into a barrier and exploded at the Rainbow Bridge crossing, killing the occupants, was subject to a recall in 2021 due to a "stuck accelerator" problem.

Incoming negligence lawsuit (against Bentley) ahoy ...

Turns out that my novel needs a reasonably accurate timeline of pregnancy and labor. The research I'm doing is going to get me like ads for diapers for the next three years, isn't it?

You call it The World Tree, I call it a menace to aerial navigation!

Two reviews for the price of one!

Wallace, Darwin, and the Origin of Species is a detailed and even-handed analysis that convincingly argues why Wallace deserves recognition as the co-discoverer of the theory of evolution.
