Chain up required for I-80 at Donner Pass and at Dunsumuir on I-5 both in California.

Chains required on I-90 at Homestake Pass in Montana.

Snow on all roads in northeast Nevada and southeast Idaho as well, with Winter Storm Warnings out for the mountains in the Salt Lake City area.

Additional high winds for the deserts of eastern California up through Las Vegas with rain moving in. Very ugly election day weather for California/Nevada in particular.

Preparing for a late-week blizzard in the Dakotas and Minnesota - 1st of the season.

@profchander

I had a brilliant developer work for me, and he wrote applications that have formed the new basis for what I do and will shape the future of the industry.

But what most people remember him for was a lookup in a shared spreadsheet that would pop up an email that was pre-addressed and pre-headed to highlight an issue, saving 300 people about 2 minutes of search 20+ times a day. He wrote it in about 20 minutes because he was annoyed at looking emails up manually.

Election day forecast for Elko, NV:

Some light snow on the ground for Elko in the morning, but strong winds with gusts up to 45mph. Cold front pusheS through on the afternoon with new snow of another 2 to 4 in town and more to the south and in higher elevations. Temps bottom out overnight.

Rough forecast pretty much anywhere for Nevada and California.

I'm told in Nevada this favors early and urban voters who are Democrats.

My 2yo just bit the top of the apple and ate the stem.

Graphic from NWS Sacramento showing this week's snow distribution along I-80 versus elevation.

He actually cleaned up his spot after breakfast, so that's refreshing . Still what the hell.

And the homeless guy eating breakfast on the steps across the street casually strolls over and rings the doorbell at 7am and strolls back to his spot. Amazing.

Yup. 5:45am officially and here I am. About 20 minutes earlier than they normally would awake without considering the time change. Of course

@codykirkp I hope they migrate over too. I'm still in both, too many locals over there for now to let down the public. Probably in a few weeks I'll try to search out some of them too see who has made a jump, or at least waded in.

Love the Comet modules. I used to have a set of the basics of winter that I'd train my seasonal staff with but I've lost the list anymore.

Do you teach grad or undergrad? Do you teach thunderstorms/mesoscale or a bit more broad?

America "falls back" 1 hour at 2am tonight to end Daylight Saving time for the year.

A wonderful holiday in which most people get an extra hour of sleep!

But please take pity on parents of young children and if 3rd shift workers who just get an extra hour of toil.

1. I just finished reading a delightful Journal of Political Economy paper by Ely, Frankel, and Kamenica about how people enjoy the revelation of information for its own sake.

Either way you learn who wins in the end, but a blowout baseball game is boring whereas the first game of the 2022 World Series was exciting and then some.

Dread is in the split second when sitting on the couch you realize your child has left a bag of chips underneath.

You will crush them. You will be upset by your child. It is tragic. It is inevitable.

@codykirkp - Welcome to the server, we can always use another met here. I'm operational for a trucking company down in Tennessee.

Did background work a couple years back for a couple of Mizzou grads on documenting Cold Air Damming in the Ozarks.

Only been in a couple of days and trying to add some daily US Hazard weather to my timeliness, hoping to get discussion and questions.

Winds 58mph gusting to 86 on I-80 in Wyoming. No light trailers today!

Trying out Tusky for Android. So far I like it, and we'll see if that continues.

I am really liking this social network. However, I can understand why it can be difficult to get into. I did find it quite difficult even while I am still tech-savvy and a computer science myself.

I cannot see the regular elon-verse grasp the minimal knowledge about how this social network works. I see a lot of people giving the analogy of "it works just like e-mail, you have servers, etc".

In this era, there are people that think that Gmail(or hotmail) is the only provider of e-mail of the whole world. I already herd "let me gmail this to you".

It shouldn't be a bad thing that mastodon has mastodon.social and that beginners think that instance is the main one. People will at least start using it and learn the true values of Mastodon in the way.

2 to 3 feet of snow for Donner Pass on I-80 in California starting late Sunday through Tuesday. Pass height is 7200ft.

Expect chain controls, potential closure on Monday.
