One thing I really miss from twitter is the translate link. I was following quite a few people who were not tweeting in English and it opened up some horizons.
I'm sure automated translation is being discussed on mastodon. Any idea what the status is?

@cleoqc feel the same way. Happy to let Twitter go but that was a nice feature.

@cleoqc Some browsers allow you to select text and choose 'translate' in the context menu. Check if yours has this feature as well? I know Vivaldi has it.

@trinsec I mostly use mobile apps to read the instances I'm on so I don't get the translate option. Also it's only a toot here and there that would require it, not the whole page. I'll have to check if Firefox has it but I don't think so.

@cleoqc I figured you don't want to translate the whole page.. but that's what I covered with 'select text'. 😅

Maybe Firefox got a plugin for it?

I agree that a built-in translation feature might be more convenient.

@trinsec oh my apologies. I missed the "select text" suggestion. That would work, even though it would be time consuming. It's probably a question of time before we get an open source translator. Just need to be patient...

@cleoqc @trinsec No clue what browser you use, Firefox has an add-on for that (probably not only one): addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef

I guess Chrome ecosystem has such too.

@cleoqc
Could be added to the list for # Suggestions... and this project / software has some principles not really about using or incorporating back in Google since some of that is not aligned with what is wanted or safe for the future (getting translations but siphoning your sensitive messages and data) or adding what might have been helpful but also at a big cost to you / humanity long-term (data / habits analysis / mind reading)
...which Mastodon prevents in doing things differently//// but yes eventually adding that on to the menu of Mastodon!

Anything else you'd like to see or similar to emulated from that realm?

@freeschool I see the point about avoiding Google. It makes sense. And I don't want a duplication of 🐦 . Mastodon/Fediverse stands on its own very well thank you! TBH the translation is the only thing I miss from 🐦 as it makes the world harder to reach.

@cleoqc
Tech's best and weakest point is to mix a whole bunch of stuff... (well one it's best and weakest!)

We'll get there with more controlled increments! We all learned from the other ways getting sold down the river [ betrayed] and then we set things straight one by one!

For translation try the best I know in many respects - deepl.com

@cleoqc I suspect the cost would be an issue at scale, and the choice of provider (IIRC 🐦 has been through at least two providers). As others mentioned, maybe an OS or browser extension that could be invoked would keep it decoupled from the core experience.
