why I don't get "particle physics"

why I don't get "particle physics"
I think there are two parallel cultures going on in high energy physics, and no one explains the connection
why I don't get "particle physics"
always the same: there's all this math and I can understand that, but after many years of trying I have not found out what a "particle" supposedly is or that it exists.
particle is a unit excitation of its field or perhaps just a field of hat type, ok. unintuitive use of the word "particle" but we go with it.
then suddenly a particle is said to be somewhere and be travelling to somewhere. how is that possible?

Genius. They wrote a script to make a PDF look like it's printed, signed, and then scanned again. Because digital signatures are still not accepted in many places while a signed and scanned printout is.
This is hacking bureaucracy. I love it!

Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.
A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."
People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.
Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.
The good news is: There are climate friendly alternatives to flying. A train ride can emit as much as 70 times less emissions than a flight.

...also, something that's six years old, but still makes a good point that I intend to make use of in my blog:
https://www.chrisstucchio.com/blog/2014/why_xkcd_style_graphs_are_important.html
xkcd-style sketchy rendering of computer-generated graphs is an important visual cue to drive home to humans (who "don't read") not to assume too much precision or accuracy out of a graph intended more to visualize patterns.
