Fediverse controversy, QOTO meta

The whole controversy around has really made me consider moving to a different instance. I joined QOTO because it federated with all other servers (only silencing/limiting in certain cases) but also hasn't gotten the same reputation for hate speech as other "free speech" instances. But it seems QOTO has already gotten defederated for much the same reason (justified or not), so it may be that QOTO's circumstances are more similar to those other instances than I thought.

I'm also not sure if my posts fit the overall tenor of this instance. I don't think I've broken any rules but I feel like my posts ought to be more STEM focused. I've kinda rationalized this by telling myself that a lot of what I talk about is related to technology, but there's a lot that isn't too.

Maybe my concerns are overblown, and I suppose I have to accept some level of negative reputation for being on an instance that casts a wider net of free speech than others. Seems like a less bad option right now.

I'll definitely use the content-warning option more often though.

@collectedoverspread Why are you planning to use CW more? Is it to fit in better with the wider Mastodon world? I haven't seen them used much in my experience (but I think wrapping the above essay was appropriate, due to its length and it being a public post.).

@DecaturNature I guess? I think it's appropriate to use CW for hot-button political and social issues, which I sometimes address.

@collectedoverspread

Follow the "Local" timeline on .org for a few minutes.

qoto.org/web/timelines/public/

You'll see the majority of public toots are not or STEM-adjacent. I am not even sure the active members are majority STEM people. So, no worries.

@collectedoverspread

Erm, depends on time of day. .com outside of work hours is much looser. I am there mostly late in the evening US time.

I still stand by QOTO being completely tolerant of non-STEM.

@EubieDrew yes, I've noticed this as well. I'm probably going to use CW (and maybe unlisted posts?) more often to avoid filling the timeline with controversial hot-button topics.

@collectedoverspread

Well most people use their home timeline, which is already curated.

I would suggest you go ahead with using public setting as you would like, but just use CW for "strong" post, and you will fine and happy.

I have been asked, gently, not to cross-post from :twitter: so much, but no one seems to care about my personal opinion posts. I usually CW those.
