"These are not ordinary conservatives. They are extremist politicians who seem to celebrate the period of brutal military dictatorship, when, beginning in 1964, the military dissolved Congress, suspended constitutional rights, and imposed extensive censorship; democracy was not restored until 1985. They claim that the great mistake of the military regime was “to torture but not kill,” as Bolsonaro himself declared in 2016."

New #EvolutionPaper #preprint with @iochromaland on the evolution of the #flavonoid pathway in the Petunieae clade of #Solanaceae. We use multivariate phylogenetic comparative methods to analyze quantitative measures of #GeneExpression and floral flavonoid #pigment content in a phylogenetic context. We find that #evolutionary transitions in floral pigmentation appear to be largely underpinned by shifts in gene expression, and uncover tradeoffs between pathway branches. ecoevorxiv.org/repository/view

"Three years into the pandemic, the immune systems of the vast majority of humans have learnt to recognize SARS-CoV-2 through vaccination, infection or, in many cases, both. But just how quickly do these types of immunity fade?"

These papers are so important. Fabulous resource, especially given the challenges of getting these samples and costs of the single cell sequencing #crohnsdisease #immunology #IMMastodon #mucosalimmunology

Understanding the impact of #climatechange and also #oceanacidifcation on
#marine #ecosystems requires study across multiple trophic levels.

This valuable new review explores the importance of #zooplankton and their response to #climatechange highlighting the likelihood of increases in CO2 from zooplankton respiration but a number of knowledge gaps to address.

“Declaring the public-health emergency over would give governments and some public-health agencies permission to look away and move on to other things,” says Mark Woolhouse, an epidemiologist at the University of Edinburgh, UK. “It remains a very significant public-health problem. About a quarter of the world is still unvaccinated, and that’s potentially a lot of vulnerable people.”

'As global demand for Covid-19 vaccines dries up, the program responsible for vaccinating the world’s poor has been urgently negotiating to try to get out of its deals with pharmaceutical companies for shots it no longer needs.

Drug companies have so far declined to refund $1.4 billion in advance payments for now-canceled doses, according to confidential documents obtained by The New York Times.'
