"The Big Con of the book’s title is not a crime; it’s a confidence trick. Consultancies and outsourcers (...) know less than they claim, cost more than they seem to, and — over the long term — prevent the public sector developing in-house capabilities"

"Recognizing that more is better is now an invalid assumption,1 the 2023 US Senate appropriations bill for FDA (included in S. 4661) and its report language encourage FDA to organize dose optimization clinical trials of marketed anticancer agents in an effort to reduce waste and/or toxicities of treatment without compromising efficacy."

New #preprint alert! What are the core symbionts of lichens? TLDR: we analyzed >400 lichen metagenomes from around the world and found that 4 bacterial groups are as frequent in lichens as the alga, one of the two main partners in the symbiosis. 🧵 1/11 https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.02.02.524463v1
'In the following review, we perform a synthesis of the different types of tumor antigens now being targeted with TCR-T cell therapy in the clinic and new promising antigens developed at the preclinical stage.'

"According to Neruda’s family, a new forensics report conducted by a group of international experts has concluded that he was poisoned while already gravely ill—a victim, most probably, of the Chilean military he had politically opposed."
'A new study offers a glimpse of the future by looking to the past. Mosquitoes that transmit malaria in sub-Saharan Africa have moved to higher elevations by about 6.5 meters (roughly 21 feet) per year and away from the Equator by 4.7 kilometers (about three miles) per year over the past century, according to the study.'

The Limitations of LB Medium
by Hiroshi Nikaido
LB medium, also known incorrectly as Luria-Bertani medium, is widely used to grow bacterial cultures, mainly because it is easy to prepare and provides a broad base of nutrients. LB broth contains, per ml, 10 mg tryptone...

We estimated the gap between expected and observed dengue cases using an interrupted time series design with a neural network and a structural Bayesian time series model.
'What doctors eventually found inside the sample — inside the baby's respiratory tract — has fueled a shift in scientists' understanding of how pandemics begin and made them reconsider the way they search for new threatening viruses. It has made them realize there could be an easier, more efficient way to find viruses like SARS-CoV-2 before they evolve into a global nightmare.'

"Las leches de fórmula, como muchos otros productos de consumo, utilizan la ciencia para venderse. Algunas de las atribuciones más frecuentes son que benefician el desarrollo del cerebro o del sistema inmunológico del bebé o que favorecen su crecimiento. Sin embargo, según un artículo publicado hoy en la revista BMJ, la mayor parte de esas virtudes saludables que aparecen en los paquetes o en los anuncios de los sustitutos de leche materna tienen escasa o ninguna evidencia científica."
