@seatsixtyone Portugal is an embarrassment - unconnected to Europe (or even Iberia) by train, all the local politicians debate is building more airports.

For those yet to see it: Europe's sleeper trains, mapped... https://files.wegewerk.com/index.php/s/Mr8WX7WMT5gd66a (Paris-Italy, and into Spain - those yawning gaps in the network just scream 'fill me!' don't they...)
10 years after we created Registered Reports, the thing critics assured us would never (in a million years) happen has happened: @Nature is offering them.
The Registered Reports initiative just went up a gear and we are one step closer to eradicating publication bias and reporting bias from science.
Congratulations to all involved in achieving this milestone.
A #preprint with a new method that could allow detecting a mutation in its infant stage, when it's still just a mismatch:
"Here, we developed a single-molecule, long-read sequencing method that achieves single-molecule fidelity for single-base substitutions when present in either one or both strands of the DNA."
At the CRG-Barcelona:

'Together, these data implicate IL-6 signalling in ongoing CD4 T cell activation in DS and offer a more specific therapeutic target than Jak inhibition for consideration by physicians treating individuals with DS.'
Here's an uncomfortable American history fact. While folks often point out that after Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Hitler refused to shake his hand.
But what happened next? Well, after returning home, Owens & 17 other Black Olympians were denied an invite to the White House. Instead, President Roosevelt only invited white Olympians. And it wasn't until 2016 that the White House finally apologized and invited their descendants to the WH.
2016.

'H5N1 is “a big worry,” said Jeremy Farrar, flu expert and outgoing director of the Wellcome Trust. “You would hate to look back in the midst of an H5N1 pandemic and say: ‘Hold on, didn’t we watch this avian population die all over the world and we started to see mammals dying and what did we do about it?’” he told a briefing in London this week.'
